Making a Decision for Bariatric Surgery
by PlacidWay

Alice knew that she needed to do something about her excessive weight, but didn't know exactly where to start. The topic was rather embarrassing for her to discuss. She hadn't meant to get so heavy, but a tragedy in her life followed by several financial and personal setbacks left her vulnerable to depression, an increasing sense of isolation, and a two-year episode of comfort-eating that ended up leading to a 100-pound plus weight gain.

Alice started looking at options for bariatric surgery, but quickly grew confused between the many different kinds offered. Not only were there so many, but each offered different benefits and drawbacks. The only thing that they all had in common was their expense.  Alice knew that bariatric surgery, in most cases, is an elective procedure, and as a result is not covered by most health insurance or medical plans.

She ultimately decided to look into bariatric surgery abroad and found several possible locations where she could have weight loss surgery performed. She decided that her best options were either a gastric band procedure or one of the newer forms of laparoscopic bariatric procedures called a gastric plication.

Gastric Band or Gastric Plication?

Deciding which type of bariatric surgery required careful research on Alice's part. She addressed the health benefits of each as well as potential risks and complications. While she preferred the reversible laparoscopic gastric plication, she also knew that the procedure was not yet approved in the United States.

Gastric placation is performed via a laparoscope. It's one of the newest types of bariatric surgery designed to offer long-term weight loss and nutritional support. Small incisions, faster healing and reduce risk of complications were just a few of the focal points regarding gastric placation that attracted Alice.

slimShe read that most gastric placation patients could expect to lose between 40% and 70% of their excess body weight during their first year post-surgery. She also knew that the procedure would help reduce her risk of obesity related co-morbidities, including diabetes and hypertension.

Gastric plication reduces the overall size of the stomach by folding the stomach over to create a long, thin tube. Her stomach would be reduced by approximately 70%, and sutured into position. This procedure, unlike some other bariatric procedures, would leave her small intestine alone, and she would not have trouble with normal digestive functions, food or nutrient breakdown, or absorption of nutrients.

Then Alice researched gastric banding. She read that gastric banding patients typically lose about 47% of their excess weight, and the procedure also helps to resolve conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes.

Gastric banding requires the implantation of two devices into the stomach; an injection port and a silicone band. The silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, dividing the stomach into two separate yet connected chambers. The injection port is attached into the abdominal wall and connected to the band with a thin tube.  Gastric bands are adjustable, and so she knew the band could be adjusted as she lost weight.

Making a Decision
After carefully assessing the risks and complications of both gastric band and laparoscopic gastric placation surgeries, Alice ultimately decided to go for the laparoscopic gastric placation procedure. She found a bariatric surgeon with high recommendations, credentials and qualifications in the laparoscopic bariatric surgery in Mexico.

Alice understands that long-term weight loss management is not an easy fix and requires long-term dedication and determination. She accessed medical resources such as PlacidWay, an international medical provider and resource, which helped her define the difference between the many different types of weight-loss surgeries available today, and helped her find a qualified and accredited facility where she could have her surgery done.

A year later, Alice has lost nearly 80 pounds and is feeling healthier, happier and more energetic than she has in years. After she reaches her goal weight, she will venture down to Mexico to have the reversal procedure performed. In the meantime, she's stuck to an easy diet plan, made changes in her eating habits, improved her lifestyle and now enjoys daily exercise.
