Dental Implants: Just the Basics
by PlacidWay

If your dentist tells you that you need a dental implant common more often than not, you'll nod and agree. But what exactly is a dental implant? What do they do and what do they look like?  To start, dental implants today are much more advanced from dental implants of even 10 years ago. Today, dental implants are made of a variety of materials and components depending on need, patient choice and preferences.

What Does a Dental Implant Look Like?
Regardless of the type of dental implant you choose, most are constructed similarly. For example, the implant is broken down into three parts; the base of the dental implant looks much like a screw. It's often constructed of a durable metal called titanium. This screw portion of the dental implant is literally screwed into the bones of the upper or lower jaw, depending on placement. The top of the screw portion is called an abutment.  This abutment takes up space in the gum and rises slightly above it.  The abutment serves as the base for a crown, the third part of an implant. A crown is a manufacturer's cap type device that looks exactly like a tooth.

Dental Implant Procedures in a Nutshell
Most dental implants are applied in a two-stage process. The first stage is the surgical part of the dental implant process where the dental implants screws are screwed into the jawbone. The implant remains just below the gum line. The area is allowed to heal for a month or more. At this point, the implants are not visible, but are situated just below the gum line. The second part of that process involves the placement of crowns over the dental implant abutment after adequate healing has taken place.

A single-stage dental implant is often performed when only one or two teeth are being replaced, especially those toward the back of the mouth. This procedure involves the implantation of a single dental implant in the jaw both, the same as the two-stage procedure. However, in this procedure, the dental implant head or abutment is situated above the gum line. Healing time is similar to the two-stage process and takes a month or so. The only difference between the two is that in the single-stage process, the abutment is visible above the gum line. At the end of his time, the crown is attached to the abutment without the need for minor surgery to expose the abutment as is required during the two-stage process.

Types of Dental Implants
Today patients have a variety of choices when it comes to their dental implants. Not only are dental implants made of a variety of materials, they come with many different types of materials, abutment designs and implant, sizes and design. For example, the most common type of material used for dental implants today includes zircon and titanium. Sizes range from narrow to wide.

Multiple manufacturers make some of the finest dental implants around the world, including:

  • Nobel Biocare - this Swedish company offers implants, bridges and crowns for advanced techniques into tooth reconstruction.
  • Zimmer - This California Company makes implants for periodontitis, prosthodontics, oral surgery and pedodontics. Brands include the BioMend Extend Membrane, Hex Lock Contour Abutments, one piece implants and particulate allografts.
  • Straumann - This Swiss company focuses on oral tissue regeneration technologies and products, and restorative dentistry, including implants.
  • Biomet 3i -This Florida Company has been around for decades and offers various dental implants and abutments.

You might need different components for dental implants at the front of your mouth than for those required for molars. Your dentist will also take into consideration the number of remaining teeth, their health, color, and tooth angles.

Cost of Dental Implants
In the United States, a single dental implant can cost between $1,000 and $5,000. Traveling to foreign destinations can save you thousands of dollars. For example, Dental Implants Croatia offers high quality dental treatments at about half the cost of treatments in the U.S. and Great Britain.

Costa Rica offers some of the most experienced and highly qualified dentists and oral surgeons in the world. PruDent-Hungary in Mosonmagyarovar has decades of experience in the best dental care at prices you can afford. Pay $600 a tooth instead of $5,000. Sounds good doesn't it?
