  Baby Boomers Take Extreme
Measures To Erase Those Wrinkles
by Anne Noble ,  | 2011-06-17

As aging baby boomers look in the mirror, there is a good chance they might not like what they see.

Wrinkles. Cleverly called “laugh lines” and “crow’s feet,” wrinkles are not a laughing matter — and so, boomers are doing something about it.

In 2010, 13.1 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures — including those that are minimally invasive or surgical — were performed in the U.S., according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. That’s a 5 percent increase from 2009. Face-lifts rose 9 percent, with 113,000 procedures.

Those figures coincide with what Dr. Pramit Malhotra is seeing in his plastic surgery practices in Jackson and Ann Arbor.

Two years ago, baby boomers might have put off any cosmetic procedures, but, “we’re seeing a huge increase now,” Malhotra says.

Patients in their 40s and 50s tend to have nonsurgical procedures such as Botox or Juvederm injections, laser light treatment or microdermabrasion, Malhotra says, while older patients opt for surgical procedures such as a face-lift, mini face-lift or neck-lift.
