What is an Abdominoplasty? Also know as a tummy tuck this procedure removes excess fat and skin to produce a flatter and tighter waistline of the abdomen. The patients will after the procedure have a thinner looking abdomen and a better shape and curve of the mid body.
How is it done? The excess skin of the lower abdomen, very often from the naval to the pubic area, is removed from hipbone to hipbone. The muscles from the most upper part of abdomen to the pubic area are sutured together, correcting the separation. Usually a complimentary liposuction is done for contouring and narrowing of the waistline. Why is it done? To remove the excess lower abdominal skin and tightening of muscles in the lower abdominal wall. This improves the both the shape and narrowing of the waistline The final result is a flatter and smaller abdomen.
Risks & Possible Complications A longer scar at the lower most part of the abdomen, bleeding, infection, skin necrosis and delayed healing may occur.
Alternatives Lipectomy: without tightening of the muscles, liposuction to improve contours.
Candidates: Patients who have excess of lower abdominal skin, separation of abdominal muscles, abnormal amounts of fatty deposits, Good general health. The procedure is not normally designed to remove excess fat from excess fatty tissue deposition.
Pre-procedure investigation. The candidate must be deemed in good general health, Blood tests will be part of the pre-investigation. Some patients might need a chest x-ray and an EKG to rule out other health problems.
Duration of hospitalization: One over night hospital stay, continued care at an extended care facility such at hotel on service apartment.
Fit to fly (after operation): About 2 weeks after the operation.
