Stress management is a very important part of preparing for any surgery – whether cosmetic or otherwise. Pre operative stress is not only physiologically harmful; it has even been show to alter body chemistry by increasing the excretion of certain hormones. In order to ensure that your surgery proceeds without any undue problems, it is important to be able to manage stress effectively, that is why we offer our clients the opportunity to align themselves with a stress management professional prior to their surgery.
Dr Justin J. Kennedy (B.Soc.Sci; MSBC; PhD) is a well known consulting specialist in the area of bio-psychological research with specific emphasis on specialized treatment protocols to reduce anxiety, stress and depression. He has recently completed a biofeedback study with Dr Fernandes from the Renaissance Body Institute that was mainly concerned with pain management. The study showed that effective stress management is a very important part of both the preparation and recuperation period of the surgical process.
Integral to the research performed at the Renaissance Body Institute was the FDA approved StressEraser™. A biofeedback tool unlike any other available on the market today, the StressEraser™ is an iPod-sized device that trains the user to optimise their Heart Rate Variability (HRV), the most concrete measure of the body's emotional state and relaxation level. Dr Kennedy's stress relief program is based on a branch of behavioural medicine that includes the use of:
- Biofeedback
- Clinical hypnosis
- Mind-fulness techniques
- Cognitive therapy
The program consists of four consultations with Dr Kennedy during which time patients are taught how to actively engage their relaxations response and experience an enduring sense of calm. By ensuring that your emotional responses prior to, during and after surgery are within your control you will not only reduce overall stress, emotional concerns and pain-related issues, you will also enjoy a shorter healing time.
The four consultations include:
- A free clinical assessment. During this session you will work closely with Dr Kennedy to determine which bio-psychological techniques would be most effective in treating your pre surgery stress.
- A preoperative consultation. On the day of your surgery, Dr Kennedy will be present to observe and guide you through the process of taking pre-op medication and accompany you to the theatre. Your anxiety levels and pain anticipation will be monitored throughout and controlled in a manner that will allow you to enter the operating theatre deeply relaxed.
- A postoperative consultation. Once you wake up from surgery, Dr Kennedy will again be there to coach you through your pain response in order to maintain your sense of well-being.
- A follow up consultation. During this meeting, Dr Kennedy will assess whether or not your healing regimen is firmly in place and suggest further methods to speed up your recuperation.
