Consultation

Your initial consultation with one of our fertility specialist Consultation doctors will include a review of your medical histories. Both you and your spouse may undergo a full physical examination, including an internal examination for women, while men may be asked to produce a semen sample for analysis. We will then explore all the options with you and come to an agreement on a suitable type of treatment. We will talk you through the process, introduce you to the nursing staff, prescribe any indicated drugs and set a date for your treatment to commence.

Preparation For Treatment

For your protection and that of any child, we will need certain preparation blood test results before we offer you treatment. Prospective mothers (and fathers who might need any surgical procedure) with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 30 should try to reduce this number before starting treatment.

Dr. Meera Sr. Consultant in IVF at Bourn Hall Clinic, Kochi, Kerala.
She obtained her MBBS, DGO, DNB and MRCOG qualifications from London and subsequently specialised in infertility practise, including IUI (Intrauterine Insemination).

Since 2008, she has worked as an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) specialist.
Dr Meera’s role also includes advising and counselling patients on IVF and Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), determining protocols, monitoring stimulation cycles, undertaking oocyte aspiration and embryo transfer. She is trained in the sperm-retrieval procedures of PESA and TESA. She was a lecturer at the Government Medical College, Kottayam, and undertook a clinical attachment at Whittingdon Hospital, London.

Dr. Richa Sharma Consultant 

Surgery with over 9 years of extensive surgical experience. First baby boy for two generations

Kate says that the arrival of a boy was extra-special because barber_argent10 she herself is one of four sisters, and Oscar was the first grandson for her parents who already had two granddaughters.

First baby boy for two generations Kate and Tim first went to their doctor for help and tests concluded that they would need IVF. The couple had their first appointment at Bourn Hall in October 2008 and the following month started their treatment.

“We couldn”t believe how quickly our treatment started once we had been referred to Bourn Hall,” says Kate. “Sadly our first round of treatment didn”t work and so I didn”t dare to be too optimistic when we embarked on the second round.”

They were given funding for further treatment and the second round was successful. In June 2009 Kate and Tim were told that Kate was pregnant. “I was shocked and elated,” says Kate.

Kate has nothing but praise for the team at Bourn Hall, saying,

“The people at Bourn Hall were just so caring and had all the time in the world for you. They do an amazing job and you really felt that every time you went in everyone recognised you and remembered you.”

The pregnancy was straightforward and Oscar was born at the Bedford Hospital South Wing.

“The IVF funding system in this region is brilliant,” she says. “Oscar has absolutely changed our lives and everyone deserves that chance.”

Baby joy for mum who conquered her fear of injections

Lisa Cane and Gary Stephens had known since they first met that they wanted to have children together, but after 3 years of trying, they began to wonder if something was wrong. Their GP referred the couple from Luton to their local hospital for tests.

Baby joy for mum who conquered her fear of injections The tests showed no serious problems with either Lisa or Gary, but it was noticed that although Gary”s sperm count was normal, his sperm had low motility. It was thought that this may be causing their difficulty in conceiving.

“Once we had the test result back, our GP offered us IVF, barber_stephens funded by the NHS,” says Lisa. “It was very straightforward – he sent us a letter confirming we had funding, and we sent a copy of it to Bourn Hall. They replied confirming everything and we took it from there. The staff at Bourn Hall have been fantastic all the way through.”

Following an initial consultation, Lisa was supplied with medications to regulate her hormones and prepare her for treatment. She required daily injections which Gary administered. “It was a hard process – I hate injections! – but Gary was able to give them to me at home which was good,” says Lisa.

“We also had lots of visits to Bourn Hall, and everyone there was brilliant!”

Finally, Lisa”s eggs were collected and fertilised in the laboratory using a process called ICSI (Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection), where a single sperm is injected in to the egg. The resulting embryo was transferred back into Lisa, and three weeks later a pregnancy test showed a positive result.

“It was amazing! We had to wait another week to confirm that I was pregnant, but it was fantastic news. Everyone we spoke to seemed amazed that it had worked first time – I just think we were incredibly fortunate.”

Baby Gracie was born on 19 June 2010, and Lisa and Gary were ecstatic.

“It was a long, hard process, but it was worth every minute!” says Lisa. “I”m loving being a mum – it was what I was born to do!

“We recently took Gracie to visit Bourn Hall, and everyone there was so pleased to see us. It”s amazing to think that that”s where it all began.”

Special delivery for post woman

Postwoman Tracey Day made the special delivery of a lifetime when she gave birth to baby Megan in July. Tracey and her husband David Galpin are delighted to be parents, ending five years of waiting.

Special delivery for postwoman The couple from Sandy, Bedfordshire, joined Louise Brown, the world”s first “test-tube baby” and Dr Jenny Joy, daughter of IVF pioneer Professor Robert Edwards for a traditional English afternoon tea in the Jacobean manor and grounds at Bourn Hall clinic. Patients past and present gathered on 20 October to celebrate the wonderful news that Professor Edwards has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine 2010.

“This baby is so special, not just for us but for all our barber_galpin family, friends and work colleagues who have supported us and also to members of the public on my round who have been delighted by Megan”s safe arrival,” says Tracey. Another reason why Megan”s birth is special is that she is the 100th baby to be born since the increase in NHS funding in May 2009, making fertility treatment more accessible to eligible couples in the region.

Tracey had been told it would be difficult for her to conceive when it was found that her levels of the hormone progesterone were very low and she wasn”t releasing any eggs. She then went on a two-year course of treatment with the fertility drug Clomid which is prescribed in blocks of 6 months with a wait in between.

“It was just endless waiting, hoping each time that this month would be successful,” remembers Tracey. “Then in May 2009 I was referred to Bourn Hall, where I very soon started treatment which involved being very brave and injecting myself with the drugs.”

Special delivery for postwomanTracey managed to produce some eggs during her first cycle of treatment, of which three became embryos and only one of which was seen to be thriving. Then she had another wait to see if she was pregnant.

“I felt nauseous after 5 days and I couldn”t resist doing a test, it was positive. But I didn”t dare to believe it until I had an 8-week scan at Bourn Hall where it was confirmed. We were over the moon.”

“I think I was probably more cautious than other pregnant women but once I had explained what this baby meant to me everyone was really understanding. They were all so pleased for us.”

Tracey says that her boss and colleagues supported her all the way and that she had been put on light duties when she first started her IVF treatment and then throughout her pregnancy, adding that her service as a postwoman did help to get her in training to be a mum.

“I was very fit and healthy which is a benefit before, during and after pregnancy and also I am used to early mornings!”

“We are delighted to have been given this chance to become parents. Megan is all that we could have ever wanted.”
