A Laser That Vaporizes Prostate

One in four men aged 50 years, half of those aged 60 and 80% of those over 80 suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia, a benign growth of the male gland compresses the urethra and causes problems of urine, stones the bladder and even kidney failure. Photoselective vaporization of the prostate with KTP green light laser is a minimally invasive surgical new procedure presented as an alternative to transurethral resection of prostate surgery most commonly used. With the development of a new high power laser, photoselective vaporization of competing with this technique and open surgery. Shortens the response time and expands the number of patients that can be tapped.

About 10 years ago scientists from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester showed that the photoselective vaporization of the prostate with KTP laser (potassium-titanium-phosphorus) of 80 watt green light was an effective alternative noninvasive and less side effects than resection Transurethral. The development of HPS laser (acronym in English for high performance system) of 120 watts and a wavelength of 532 nm laser improves the efficiency of initial intervention reduces the time, is applied in patients with increased prostate volume, very old age and reduces side effects.

For the realization of this technique, which requires spinal anesthesia, a cystoscope into the bladder through the urethra. This device contains a working channel through which a laser fiber is introduced green light that heats the selected hyperplastic tissue to 100 degrees Celsius. At this temperature the tissue is vaporized or disappears. Simultaneously, heat is generated to coagulate the surgical site and produces a seal that prevents vascular bleeding of the patient. The procedure lasts between half an hour and a half.

"This technique is indicated when medical therapy fails and the disease progresses, its symptoms or complications. No matter the age of the patient. In fact, as is a technique in which bleeds less, is a very proper for patients high surgical risk who are older and have added other diseases respiratory, renal or cardiovascular disease or taking antiplatelet agents or anticoagulants. also for patients who want to return soon to their working lives, "says Eldiberto Fernandez, attending physician of urology hospital Ramon y Cajal and clinical chief of Urology at the Hospital San Rafael de Madrid.
