Global Hospitals is the brainchild of Dr. K. Ravindranath, a pioneer in Laparoscopic Surgery in India. A long and successful international career in Surgical Gastroenterology and Laparoscopic Surgery has made him one of India’s most admired gastrointestinal surgeons. In recognition of his services he has been chosen President of the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endosurgeons (IAGES) and Vice – President of the Association of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia, Singapore .

Working closely with the King’s College Hospital’s Liver Transplant team fuelled Dr. K. Ravindranath’s desire to establish transplantation facilities of similar standards in India. Operation Theatre Complex

Global Hospitals has four operation suites two exclusively for transplantation procedures, one for laparoscopic surgery and one for general surgeries

The entire area is isolated with a sterile corridor. An air-shower device, joint less flooring, walls lined with antifungal, antibacterial material, independent laminar airflow mechanisms and filters, all enhance and maintain theatre sterility.

The hospital is the first Andhra Pradesh to be recognised by the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi, for conducting a super – speciality course –DNB in GI Surgery. Haematology & Bone Marrow Transplantation 
  
Haematology Services

The department of Haematology started functioning in 2002 to serve both paediatric and adult haematology and haemato-oncology patients. The department sees 600 new outpatients, with a wide spectrum of haematological conditions and serves about 200 inpatients every year. Acute lymphatic leukemia is being treated with German BFM protocols with 80 to 90% long-term survival in children. The department has over 20 new patients with severe aplastic anaemia each year and provides consultation haematology services for all patients under various medical and surgical services in the hospital.

Haemophilia

Comprehensive care is available for patients with haemophilia. Major surgery is also being performed for these patients in the institution. Efficacy and safety of low dose factor replacement for post operative haemostasis is being evaluated and practiced in the hospital with excellent results.

Multi-Organ Transplantation
  
Global Hospitals is the first one to launch a multi-organ transplant centre in India. Since its inception in 2002, we have performed 59 liver transplants including 15 living related transplants. We have 85% success rate comparable to any transplant centre in the world. Our team is trained in USA, UK (Kings College Hospital) and Japan (by Prof Tanaka). We have excellent hepatogists who are also trained abroad, namely Dr. Dharmesh Kapoor (Adult) and Dr. K. Ramesh (Paediatric). The transplant program is supported by well trained liver anaesthesiologists Dr. PBN Gopal trained at King’s College, UK.

Post operative care
The patient will be kept in the Liver ICU for 24-48 hrs for close monitoring. When the patient recovers fully and tests of liver functioning improve, the patient will be kept in ward for 2-3 weeks to stabilise the liver function and medication to prevent rejection (immunosuppression).

Living with transplant
After discharge from hospital, liver transplant patients can lead a normal life. They can have children. The most important responsibility on them is to take medicines to prevent rejection (immunosuppression)

Types of Liver transplant:

• Cadaver or Living related depending on the type of donor.
• Split liver transplant:
  A single cadaver liver can be split into two and transplanted into a child and an adult or into two adults.

The theatre walls of ICU complex are lined with Dupont's Corian material. This material is anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and without joints. My name is K. Ramesh Reddy. I run my own business of Transport. I hail from Proddutur, Cuddapah District of Andhra Pradesh. I was suffering from liver problem from the past few years. The doctors in Proddutur, Delhi and in Hyderabad said that the liver is fully damaged and that I would need a liver transplant. I am a Chief Purchase Manager in a Private Company working since several years. My liver problem was diagnosed as a fatty liver in 1996. Thereafter in 1998, I was diagnosed to have cirrhosis of liver at Bombay. With reference from the doctors in Bombay I later consulted the doctors in Global Hospitals where I was advised for a liver transplant. Prior to this I went to different hospitals in Delhi and Bombay. Looking at the two places I found Global Hospitals a better place because of the type of facilities and the type of hygiene, I have decided to go for the operation here. I got my liver transplant assessment done at Global in the month of April and got the cadaver organ in the month of May. With the excellent liver transplant team on work I got my transplant done. They took care of me very well and I was perfectly fit after 9 days. I was out of ICU.

I am really thankful to my company and family who gave me moral support. Global Hospitals, Hyderabad, has made history by carrying out the first ever heart transplant in Andhra Pradesh and breathed new life into a 33-year-year-old daily wage earner and bread winner of the family who was afflicted with an end-stage heart disease.

The transplant of the heart, harvested from a brain dead person, was carried out yesterday. The recipient's condition is stable. He is talking and taking fluids. He will remain in the Intensive Care Unit for the next two or three days.

Global Hospitals has undertaken its first heart transplant totally free of cost considering that the patient, K. Ramesh, belonged to the poorest of the poor of Medchal in Ranga Reddy district. (A heart transplant in the Indian context costs Rs.6 lakh to Rs.8 lakh, against Rs.$100000 in the U. S.).

The heart transplantation team, headed by Dr. Alla Gopalakrishna Gokhale, Cardio Thoracic and Transplant Surgeon and Dr. Shailender Singh, Interventional Cardiologist, included Cardiologists Dr. V. Rajasekhar, Dr. S. V. Krishna Rao and Dr. Sumeeth Sinha and Anaesthesiologists Dr. N. V. V. S. Murthy, Dr. Krishna Prasad, Dr. Pyarelal and Dr. Usha. The patient, Ramesh, had been suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy in which the heart is damaged for reasons not known. The symptoms included breathlessness, swelling of legs and inability to move about. As Ramesh did not respond to medical therapy, he was told there was no alternative to a heart transplant for him. He was so sick that doctors concluded he would not live for more than a few weeks. Although he expressed his inability to afford the costs, he was put on the waiting list for a transplant at Global Hospitals.

Global Hospitals received the first information of a cadaver heart being available around 10-15 p.m. on Thursday, February 5 from MOHAN (Multi-Organ Harvesting Aid Network) Foundation. Global Hospitals' doctors went to NIMS, where the family of a person injured in a road accident and was declared brain dead, agreed to donate his organs, and harvested the heart and the liver. The heart transplantation at Global Hospitals was begun around 5-30 a.m. and completed by 10-30 a.m. on Friday

A team of doctors from Global Hospitals, which had undergone training in heart transplantation at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital New York, had returned only on January 30. (The Presbyterian Hospital does 100 heart transplants a year). In less than a week of their return, they had the opportunity of carrying out the first heart transplantation for Andhra Pradesh. "We have the proud privilege of taking heart surgery to its ultimate in Andhra Pradesh", says Dr. Gokhale.

The heart transplant marks a new milestone in Global Hospitals' progress. Conceived and built to undertake multi-organ transplantation, it was formally inaugurated in May 2002. It has so far successfully undertaken eight liver and 34 kidney transplants.

According to Dr. K. Ravindranath, Managing Director, Global Hospitals, the latest transplant exemplifies how the magnanimity of a person fatally injured in a road accident has helped five persons. It also highlights the inter-institutional cooperation. MOHAN (Multi-Organ Harvesting Aid Network) Foundation and NIMS counsellors motivated the kith and kin of the brain-dead patient in NIMS to donate the organs. Forensic experts from Gandhi Medical College and the police facilitated compliance with legal formalities. NIMS and Apollo Hospitals carried out the transplantation of one kidney each and the LV Prasad Eye Institute, the transplantation of an eye. Global Hospitals, which has been doing liver transplantations routinely and was geared up to undertake heart transplantation, carried out both liver and heart transplants. Global Hospitals thus revived two persons stricken with end-stage liver and heart diseases.
