Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) Treatment Abroad

Overview

Platelet-Rich Plasma or PRP is blood plasma which has been enriched with platelets. Platelets are very small blood cells which are involved in the clotting process. They release enzymes which promote healing and a series of tissue responses such as attracting stem cells to heal and repair a damaged area.

The first PRP injection was performed in 1987 during an open heart surgery to speed the healing process. The innovative therapy is now used in many fields, such as orthopedics, sports medicine, urology and cosmetic procedures. So Platelet Rich Plasma not only speeds healing in injuries and wounds, but it also improves skin texture, wrinkles and lines.

The fact that the procedure uses the patient's own blood, which can be quite sinister, it has also been called the Dracula Therapy or the Vampire Facial. Still, those who have tried the procedure, among which a considerable number of athletes, actors, singers and other celebrities, have seen that there is nothing gruesome about PRP.

How does PRP work?

PRP injections are the perfect cosmetic treatment especially for those who cannot tolerate cosmetic products. As the procedure uses only the patient's own tissue and cells, it has a high success rate. Still, PRP is not effective in improving the appearance of loose skin. In this case surgery is necessary.

The doctor will take some blood from the patient, will add calcium chloride solution in it to speed the process and place it in a centrifuge for around 20 minutes. During this time the platelets will separate from the rest of the blood, making their concentration three to four times the normal level. Then the clear platelet rich plasma will be injected in the skin areas where improvements are needed.

For the best results, three PRP treatments will be necessary, usually a  month apart. The procedure improves the skin's ability to rejuvenate, giving the patient a radiant and fresher look. After  a three month treatment (once a month) the patient will enjoy the benefits of the procedure for up to 18 months. A single PRP procedure last around 30 min and the patient will experience swelling and bruising for about a week.

Cost of PRP Treatment

Although Platelet Rich Plasma therapy has been used for almost a decade, the price for the procedure is not yet covered by most insurance companies.  A single PRP injection costs from $500 to $1,000 in the US, but prices can drop to $250 in Eastern Europe or even $125 in India.

PRP is a safe and simple procedure, with no risk of diseases transmission, immune or allergic reactions as it uses the patient's own blood. Platelet Rich Plasma therapy is a promising cosmetic, anti-aging and regenerative procedure with a tremendous potential.
