Root Resection Procedure

During a root resection, the oral surgeon makes the cut in the gum and lift the flap of skin covering the tooth, known as dental flap surgery. The dentist then drills or cuts into the dental bone of the tooth until the tooth roots are exposed. The oral surgeon then drills into the damaged root, removing it in pieces from the remainder of the tooth, which is left in place.

Dental flap and root resection procedures may take between one and three hours, depending on individual case scenarios. These procedures are performed in a dental office. Most situations will require several sutures, which remain in place for about a week. In most cases, sutures are self-dissolving. In most scenarios, the dental patient will receive analgesics for pain, as well as antibiotics.
