Featured Treatment—What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word meaning the "science of life". The ancients visualized the universe as a constant play of energies, an imbalance of which created discomfort and disease in the body. It was the duty of the vaidya (physician) to harmonize this imbalance of the body - mind environment.

Ayurveda is a system that helps maintain health in a person by using the inherent principles of nature to bring the individual back into equilibrium with their true self.

This tradition of natural medicine has been part of the culture and daily life in India for over 5000 years. In recent years, it has been gaining in recognition in Europe and the West. The best-selling author and speaker Deepak Chopra’s writing and seminars are based on Ayurvedic principles.

Unlike Western medicine, Ayurveda does not treat specific illness or diseases; instead, this holistic modality looks at the entire array of elements that make up an individual's life. As a result, patients undergoing Ayurvedic treatment will not leave with a long list of medications. Rather, they will learn how to achieve total mind-body health using the least invasive methods possible.

Ayurvedic treatment plans include dietary counseling, natural herbs and supplements, massage, yoga, aromatherapy, and specialized detoxification and rejuvenation treatments.
