What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is a bone and joint disease that mainly afflicts the elderly, but can start to cause noticeable problems in middle age or for those who've experienced a joint injury in the past. Osteoarthritis is actually a combination of two conditions - arthritis, which means joint inflammation, and osteoporosis, or reduced bone mass. When combined, you feel stiff after long periods of activity, may experience limited range of motion in the affected joint, or chronic pain in the affected area.

Conservative Approach to Osteoarthritis
Medications that reduce inflammation are common approaches to treating the symptoms of osteoarthritis. To date, there's no cure for the condition, although prevention measures and awareness taken in your 20s and 30s can help reduce your risk for osteoarthritis in your later years.

Once you start feeling those aches and pains, caused by bone ends rubbing together, you can't reverse the condition, but you can help keep it from worsening. Arthritis is caused by the gradual thinning of the cushioning cartilage disks found between bone ends or a reduction of another cushioning substance that surrounds joints in a protective sac called synovial fluid.

There are over 100 different types of arthritis and even more bones in your body. Chances are that as you age, some of those bones and joints are going to start showing wear and tear. For those who don't want to start taking over-the-counter medications for the relief of inflammation such as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) or prescription medications such as Celebrex.

Ayurvedic Approach to Osteoarthritis
One of the oldest traditional or alternative forms of medical treatment and care in the world is Ayurveda. Originating in India, Ayurveda and Ayurvedic treatments focus on a whole-body approach to medical care; combining your mental, physical and spiritual well-being when approaching and dealing with common ailments.

A popular osteoarthritis treatment center known around the world is the Indus Valley Ayurveda Center in Mysore, India. Multiple forms and methods toward the Ayurvedic approach to pain, stiffness, and overall health and wellness are the focus of doctors, nutritionists and experts in pain management and chronic conditions at Indus Valley.

In Ayurvedic terminology, osteoarthritis is called sandhivata. Ayurveda instruction defines osteoarthritis being caused by degeneration of joint cartilage due to the natural aging process, excessive joint strain, overuse, or prior injury to the joint. Conservative doctors and physicians also believe and agree on this apt description of what causes osteoarthritis. However, Ayurveda also believes that the condition is caused by an imbalance in the body's doshas, one of several that involve the circulation, function and health of organ systems throughout the body.

Osteoarthritis, according to the Ayurvedic approach, is caused by an imbalance in the kapha dosha, which controls lubrication, cushioning and synovial joint fluid, among other functions. This depletion of synovial fluid and cartilage leads to a narrower gap between joint ends, often resulting in friction, pain when the joint is bent, and joint inflammation.

Ayurvedic Treatments for Osteoarthritis
Ayurveda treatments offer an effective approach to relief and pain caused by osteoarthritis that include but are not limited to such treatments as:

  • Changes in diet and exercise
  • Panchkarma detoxification techniques
  • Sthanika Chikitsa - a localized treatment therapy using non-toxic Ayurvedic herbs for strengthening and lubricating the joints
  • Rasayana Chikista - a form of rejuvenating therapy that include methods such as:

o    Yoga
o    Matra Basthi
o    Abhyanga
o    Navarakizhi

Each of these and many others under Rasayana Chikista forms of Ayurvedic treatment are popular treatments for those diagnosed with arthritis, osteoporosis or osteoarthritis. Striving for a healthier lifestyle and diet itself relieves many common symptoms of all three conditions.
