Brian Watwood, inventor of the Wijit Lever Driving and Braking System for wheelchairs, today was named winner of the SARTA MedStart 2012 Claire Pomeroy Award for Innovation in Medical Technology.

The Wijit system, assembled by PRIDE Industries in Roseville, gives manual wheelchair users better mobility while protecting them from repetitive stress injuries. Its levers and transmission reduce the effort it takes to self-propel a chair by 50 percent, also cutting in half the number of pushes a user makes each day.

The award, named for UC Davis Health System CEO Claire Pomeroy, was announced as part of today's daylong activities at the Sacramento Area Regional Technology Alliance's Med Tech Showcase at the Woodlake Hotel.

Watwood was paralyzed from the neck down in 1987 and is confined to a wheelchair. His experiences prompted him to develop the Wijit.
