Chi?in?u

Capital city of Republic of Moldova is Chi?in?u - the largest city being located right in the center of the country. Chi?in?u covers an area of 571 km², is organized into 5 sectors (Buiucani, Botanica, Center, Râ?cani, Ciocana) and has a population of 589,445 inhabitants (census 2004). Chi?in?u is the cultural, economic and political center of the country. The city is nicknamed “Little Rome” due to the 7 hills on which is located and “White-stone city” because of the large light-colored buildings constructed from white limestone rocks.

Sights in Chi?in?u

• The gates of Chi?in?u - a set of multi-storey buildings on Dacia Boulevard, located at the entrance to Chi?in?u from Airport;

• The Nativity Cathedral - was built in 1836 by architect Abraham Melnikov. It is built from stone and brick and has three altars: the main one (dedicated to Nativity) and two lateral (the right one dedicated to Saint Martyr Nichita and left dedicated to St. John the New, which were later dedicated to St. Alexander Nevsky and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker);

• Monument of Stephen the Great and the Public Garden with the same name;

• Arch of Triumph and government building in central square;

• National Museum of Archaeology and History of Moldova and the Statue “Lupa Capitolina” placed in front of the museum. The statue was donated in 1921 by the Italian State, on the occasion of the Union of Bessarabia and Bukovina with the Romanian lands. The statue was destroyed in 1940 by Soviet occupation troops, and in 1991 was replaced with a copy given by the Romanian state.
