Charities

Seventh-Day Adventist Mission Clinic, 1924
The charity arm of the hospital has come a long way since its early beginnings, however its initial mission of serving the poor has not diminished till this day.

Back in the days when the hospital was known to many as the "Seventh-Day Adventist Mission Clinic" proudly displayed on the signboard of the clinic were the words, "Poor Treated Free." That's precisely what was practiced - no fees were accepted from poor patients.

To this very day, the hospital's mission remains the same and has continued to provide quality healthcare even to those unable to fully meet the cost of their medical bills. This is made possible due to the availability of the hospital’s various funds.

Funds available for those in need of discounted benefits include:

  • Medical Charity Fund
  • Local Heart Patients' Fund
  • International Children Heart Patients' Fund
  • A not-for-profit healthcare facility in the northern region of Malaysia, Penang Adventist Hospital has been able to mend hearts, change lives because corporate citizens as well as individual donors have shown their caring and made a lifetime of difference in the lives of the less fortunate.

Development Office
Dedicated in managing the philanthropic activities of the hospital, the Development Office of Penang Adventist Hospital was recently established.

Our Vision
We are an enthusiastic group of staff and community partners, working together and building firm relationships with one another and the people whose lives we make a difference in.

Our Mission
We are dedicated towards facilitating the giving of financial and other gifts by philanthropists and channeling the gifts to make a difference in the lives of the poor and needy through medical services of the hospital.

Our Objective

  • To raise funds to support the philanthropic activities of the hospital.
  • To provide financial assistance to patients suffering from heart diseases.
  • To solicit private, corporate and community contributions to carry out Penang Adventist Hospital’s mission of helping those in need.

Medical Charity Fund
Penang Adventist Hospital has been actively involved in charity work since its early beginnings in 1924. Through the hospital's development over the years, charity work has never stopped. Setting up the Heart Patients' Fund in 1988 was just another step in the hospital's growing dedication to better-serving the less fortunate.

Medical Social Services
Increasing its commitment to the community, the hospital hired a Medical Social Officer in the beginning of 1997 to attend to, investigate and report on charity cases in Penang Adventist Hospital. A Charity Fund Committee was also formed to carefully determine the worthy poor patients.

Medical Social Officer
The Medical Social Officer is here to better serve the needs of those applying for charity help. Under the direction of the Medical Social Officer, the department of Medical Social Services assist patients and/or patients' relatives to remove and reduce obstacles when seeking healthcare treatment in our hospital by showing God's love and providing financial, emotional and social support.

The Medical Social Officer liaises with doctors, nurses, other health professionals, as well as community resources and welfare agents in providing solutions for patients who are unable to meet medical costs.

Funding for Hospital Charity
A Sabbath Charity Fund, which is income generated from the hospital during the Sabbath hours, (sunset Friday till sunset Saturday) is set up for financing the social services. The Charity Fund is controlled and administered by the Charity Fund Committee and Administrators of the hospital.

Follow-up Care
The beneficiary must make arrangements to meet with the doctor.  Should follow-up care be necessary, the Medical Social Officer will pay home visits.

Education
The hospital has various programs, seminars and activities that promote health and healthful living methods.

Referral and Transfer
Should beneficiaries of the hospital wish to transfer to other social agencies, it is the responsibility of the beneficiary (or his/her family) to make the necessary arrangements.

Community Participation
Penang Adventist Hospital has actively been involved in community work. The hospital allows its ambulances, nurses and doctors to participate in social and health programs and functions run by the government and/or other social agencies. Doctors and nurses are involved in blood donation drives and support fund raising activities that involve helping the needy.

Heart Patients' Fund

The Heart Patients’ Fund was established in June 1988, to lessen the financial burdens faced by those needing heart surgery.

Since its early beginnings, the Fund’s aim has been to provide partial or full financial support to those unable to meet the full cost of heart surgery.

Gift of Life - Penang
The Gift of Life, Inc. began as a World Community Service Programme initiated by the Rotary District #7250 in 1975. Its aim has been to reach out to needy and less fortunate children from developing countries and to provide them with a chance at having a new lease of life through open heart surgery.

The birth of the Gift of Life in the United States has since gone beyond borders to touch the lives and mend the hearts of many children from many parts of the world.

Penang Adventist Hospital is granted as the referral.

The Wishing Well Project

Wishing Well in PAH
Imported directly from the United States of America, the wishing wells range from miniature-size to three-feet in diameter. The wells are the first of its kind in Malaysia and have been donated by Southern Bank Berhad, the first corporate sponsor of The Wishing Well Project, a joint project between Penang Adventist Hospital and the Rotary Club of Penang District 3300.

Donors will not only be able to make the wish of a child in need of corrective heart surgery come true, but will have fun in giving. The coins placed in the launching ramps of the wishing wells will spin around the vortex and increase in speed until it disappears at the base of the well. With the increasing speed and the diminishing number of circles the coins make, one knows that the money will benefit a child in need of corrective heart surgery at Penang Adventist Hospital.

Funds raised through The Wishing Well Project will go towards the Gift of Life – Penang Programme, a programme that benefits the less fortunate children in need of corrective heart surgery. The Gift of Life – Penang Programme is a joint project between Penang Adventist Hospital’s Heart Patients’ Fund and the Rotary Club of Penang.

The Programme has thus far benefited over 80 children from countries such as Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines receive the precious gift of life.

Penang Adventist Hosiptal - Malaysia Treatments Offered

Specialities

Anaesthesiology

What Anaesthesiologists Do?
Anaesthesiologists are specially trained to provide the following patient care services:

  • Provide anaesthesia and care for patients during surgery
  • Supervise recovery care for patients after surgery
  • Provide pain management for patients
  • Provide intensive care for ill patients
  • Provide emergency cardio-respiratory resuscitation for patients
  • Management of acutely ill patients during transfer to hospital

Role of the Anaesthesiologist in Patient Care During Surgery-Monitoring a patient's progress

Surgery is both stressful and painful for patients. Anaesthesiologists are there to help patients cope with this stress an pain. In order to anaesthetize and take care of patients, the anaesthesiologist will need to talk and examine the patients before surgery either a day before or on the day of surgery, if patients come on the day of surgery. Some investigations may be ordered when necessary to assess the heart, lungs and other systems. All these will allow the anaesthesiologist, who is specially trained to manage acute crisis, to provide safe anaesthesia and prepare for any expected complications in very ill patients who require urgent surgery.

Patients will normally be given some medication to help keep calm or to reduce the pain as they are wheeled into the Operating Room. Once in the Operating Room, patients will be connected to monitoring devices that allow the anaesthesiologist easy supervision.

The anaesthesiologist may use the following techniques to provide anaesthesia for patients

General Anaesthetics--patients are put to 'sleep' using an injection or inhaling gas. They are unconscious, pain-free and usually unaware.
Regional Anaesthetics--injection of local anaesthetics to numb the site where surgery is to be done. Some sedation may be given after the injection to calm to patients.

Role of the Anaesthesiologist in the Recovery Room
After an operation, patients will be transferred to the recovery room to recuperate from anaesthetics. The anaesthesiologist will supervise this recovery stage to make sure the patients are awake, comfortable, and stable before allowed to return to the ward, or home for day cases. Patients who have had major surgery and require ventilatory (breathing machine) support will be managed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under the supervision of the anaesthesiologist concerned.

Role of the Anaesthesiologist in Pain Management
The anaesthesiologist can provide relief in all acute pain due to trauma or other acute illnesses, post-surgical pain, labour pain, chronic pain, and pain due to terminal cancer. There are several methods in providing pain relief. Please consult with your anaesthesiologist for more information.

For a comfortable and less stressful delivery, mothers-to-be can request for epidural analgesia. This method of labour pain relief makes baby delivery more comfortable. A small catheter is placed into the epidural space at the back of the spine and local anaesthetic is injected to numb the nerves to provide pain relief during labour.

Role of the Anaesthesiologist in Emergency Resuscitation and Patient Transfer to Other Medical Institutions
Anaesthesiologists are specially trained to resuscitate patients who are acutely ill (for example, cardio-respiratory failure). This usually involves other specialists who work together with the anaesthesiologist to save a patient's life. In trauma patients, initial resuscitation needs to be done before surgery. The job of the anaesthesiologist is to make sure that the patients are given the best chance to survive the operation by adequate resuscitation. The anaesthesiologist is also involved in transferring very sick patients who may require mechanical respiratory support and other medical supports to another medical institution for more specialized treatment.

Amblyopia (lazy eye) is poor vision in one eye that did not develop normal sight during childhood. It may be caused by many factors and successful treatment depends on the age of the child and how severe the problem is.

Strabismus (squint) occurs when one eye is straight and the other eye turns away from the straight position. A squint can lead to amblyopia, poor vision or abnormal head position.

Orthopaedics
Since May 1986, the Orthopaedic Unit has been providing a wide range of services for the clients of Penang Adventist Hospital. From managing simple fractures to major surgeries such as joint replacements, this unit has met the orthopaedic needs of all age groups.

Orthopaedic surgery
The Orthopaedic Unit which consists of two orthopaedic surgeons and supported by a well-equipped Physiotherapy Unit, promotes an effective program for our clients' optimum recovery. Dedicated ancillary support by the Radiology Unit, Laboratory and Pharmacy in order to provide total care. With such back up, our Orthopaedic Unit is able to provide complete care using the latest technology.

The orthopaedic surgeon utilizes special skills and the latest techniques in managing problems of the bone that are congenital or caused by disease, accidents or injury. Orthopaedic problems may be treated by medication, manipulation, physiotherapy, or surgery.

Orthopaedics

Most often the results of a mishap are not serious; however, many accidents do result in injuries ranging from minor to fatal. In such situations, the prevention of complications is of greatest importance and only a skilled specialist can detect early problems. An orthopaedic specialist is needed to assess and treat any person who is a victim of an accident. From the fractures in little children to replacement of joints in the elderly, an orthopaedic specialist is an important service provider in the medical field.

Anyone who has any lumps or bumps on the limbs, unexplained painfulness of the back or limbs and joint pains that last more than a week need to be checked out by an orthopaedic specialist. Besides arthritis and rheumatism, we now have another silent killer - osteoporosis, which is becoming more common in our society. The orthopaedic specialist provides detection and treatment of osteoporosis especially in the elderly.

Orthopaedic management includes rehabilitation of individuals recovering from skeletal injury, surgery or disease and is carried out with the assistance of the physiotherapist.

Emergency orthopaedic care is available 24-hours a day at the Emergency Room for all orthopaedic problems

Asthma Support Group
Bronchial Asthma or Respiratory Allergy is a very common chronic childhood illness. Despite of availability of safe and effective drug treatment for asthma, studies have shown significant morbidity & mortality. It's prevalence is increasing and a local study found that 13.8% of primary scholl children in K.L. to be ashmatic. A large number of our pediatric patients (about 30%) are asthmatic.

There are many parents who are not well informed about this condition, and this lead them to wrong perceptions regarding steroid inhalers; complications/adverse effetcs and prophylactic treatment. Another common problem is the wrong technique in using the inhalation devices.

To our knowledge, there is no support group for children with Bronchial Asthma in Penang. By having our own support group we hope to be able to educate these group of parents improve the management of asthma among our pediatric patients.

Therefore with the combination of effective medical treatment and asthma education, we hope to improve asthma control and quality of life, whereby these children are able to lead a more healthy and active life despite of their illness.

Day Surgery
Under certain circumstances it is more prudent to undergo day-care surgery for some uncomplicated urological procedures. Patients would receive sufficient monitoring and appropriate post-operative care by attending nurses at the recovery area until full recuperation.

Outpatient Urology Clinic
After registration, all patients with urological problems would be examined and assessed by the consultant urologist. Relevant investigations like urine or blood tests, ultrasound scanning, x-rays, etc., would be undertaken to determine the diagnosis. Following diagnosis, appropriate treatment advice would be discussed with the patients.

Urology Inpatient Service
Every patient referred for urology consultation would receive appropriate attention. Relevant investigation and treatment would be implemented in liaison with the attending physician. Upon discharge, timely follow-up would be scheduled at the urology clinic to review patient's progress.

Management of Chronic Venous Insufficiency
Superficial and deep venous insufficiency start with leaking valves, leading to venous reflux from deep vessels towards the superficial network and venous dilatation, finally resulting in decompensation. Heaviness, cramps, pains and swellings are some of the common symptoms. Varicose veins of the lower limbs are associated with a hereditary predisposition but develop in response to various triggering factors such as pregnancy, aging, trauma or following deep venous thrombosis.

Management involves use of phlebotonic agents, bandages, gradient stockings, injection sclerotherapy, and surgery.

Management of Leg Swellings
These are due to venous or lymphatic diseases.

  • Deep venous thrombosis (DVT)s are common in patients confined to bed and is potentially serious. Economy Class Syndrome, in air travel, refers to the same condition.

Pulmonary embolism is a major complication resulting from thrombus formation, often within the deep venous system of the leg & occasionally, from pelvic and subclavian vein thrombosis; it is associated with a high mortality. Deep venous thrombosis not only presents an immediate risk of life but is also associated with late sequelae such as post-thrombotic syndrome (venous ulcer) and varicose veins.

Early management involves anticoagulation (heparin and warfarin), thrombolytic therapy & surgery. In chronic DVT states, filter insertion into the inferior vena vaca prevent pulmonary embolism.

Management of Leg Ulcers

Most of the leg ulcers are of arterial, venous or diabetic in nature. Arterial ulcers are due to insufficiency due to blockage or narrowing of blood vessels. Venous ulcers are due to reflux due to build up of back pressure in blood vessels & valve incompetency. Diabetic ulcers are due to mixture of both arterial and nerve problems.

Management of Acute or Chronic Ischaemic Limbs

Management of arterial ischemia ulcers or gangrene involves medical therapy with angioplasty, arterial bypass or sometimes amputations. Venous ulcers can be managed in the same way as chronic venous insufficiency while diabetic ulcer is managed non-surgically (conservatively) except when there is occlusion, then, angioplasty or bypass may be needed.

Thrombolytic Therapy
In situ arterial thrombosis is the most common indication for local thrombolytic therapy. In the developed world it causes 40-58% of cases of acute limb ischaemia.

Stenosis is the most common cause of in situ arterial thrombosis in the iliac & femoral-popliteal segments. Thrombolysis offers the opportunity of dissolving the thrombus & unmasking the stenosis, which can then be treated with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty or surgery.

Aneurysm in the popliteal artery, ectasia, bypass graft thrombosis and hyperthrombotic states are other conditions where thrombolytic therapy can be useful.

Management of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) Open Surgical Repair or Endovascular Stenting
AAAs represent a degenerative process that has often been attributed to atherosclerosis because of the elderly age of the patients affected & the universal atherosclerotic changes in their arteries.

If the physician feels there is a risk the abdominal aortic aneurysm may bust, he or she may choose one of these two types of treatment:

  • Open surgical repairs
  • Endovascular repair

Management of Carotid Artery Disease
Stroke or cerebrovascular disease constitutes an important cause of disability among the elderly. Thromboembolic disease accounts for about 75 % of new strokes each year. Of these, carotid artery occlusive disease is probably the single most important causal factor in the development of cerebrovascular ischemia. Transient monocular blindness or amaurosis fugar and transient ischemic attack (TIA) constitute important warning signs of impending stroke. Duplex scanning is an important non-invasive form of investigation to confirm diagnosis. In severe cases of symptomatic disease, apart from medical therapy, carotid endarterectomy is an established modality of treatment where carotid artery stenosis exceeds greater than 70%.

Venous Access Procedures

  • Reconstruction of arteriovenous fistula for dialysis in chronic renal failure
  • Insertion of Hickman line, tunnelled central line, etc.
  • Insertion of portacath / vasoport unit
  • Angioplasties / stenting of stenotic fistulas or subclavian veins.

Repair of Arterial Trauma
Vascular trauma is often part of major motor-vehicle accidents. Common vessels involved are the popliteal, superficial femoral, femoral and brachial arteries and their associated veins. Early referral by 6-12 hours ensures success.

ELVeS : New Treatment For Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are a frequently occuring condition with up to 40% of women & 20% of men likely to suffer from symptoms such as fatigue, pain and swelling of the lower limbs. Soft tissue breakdown (dermatitis), bleeding, ulceration can result if left untreated.

The Endo Laser Vein System(ELVeS) is a versatile system that treats venous incompetence. Treatment can be performed on a Day-Case basis under local anaesthetic with many benefits for the patient including minimal discomfort, short treatment time, excellent aesthetic results and a rapid return to normal activities.

The laser optical fibre is inserted into the vein and closed from the inside by the thermal laser energy. Procedure is approximately one hour. The potential side effects are minor and include thermal injury (burn) to the overlying skin or intervening tissue, perforation of the vein, superficial phlebitis (inflammation of the vein), hyperpigmentation (darkening of the overlying skin) or revascularisation (growth of new veins).

ELVeS is generally well tolerated by patients and shows impressive and convincing cosmetic results. As the procedure is minimally invasive it leaves virtually no scars.

RELAY FOR L I F E 2 0 0 8

On March 8, 2008, 215 staff, doctors and nurses from Penang Adventist Hospital and Adventist College of Nursing participated in a fundraising event organized by the National Cancer Society, Penang Branch. It was raining, yet, the hospital staff were enthusiastic and cheered on the survivors as they walked. Banners with messages like "Never, never, never give up" were held up high against the cloudy sky. One of the students nurses participated in the Miss-ter Purple Fantasy Competition and won 1st runner-up! There were also plenty of games, attractive lucky draw prizes, entertainment and food to go around the whole night.

A six-month girl in a charity hospital here with serious heart disorder has died while arrangements were being finalised for live-saving surgery overseas.

But five others in the 'super-urgent' batch needing corrective operations will make the trip to the Penang Adventist Hospital on May 3 under a gift of life programme.

There will be nine more trips, each accompanied by mothers of patients, a local doctor and nurse, until October to save 45 lives.

The victims, from impoverished families, will pay nothing for the trips and treatment, which cost about US$5,000 each.

Rotary International, the government, Royal Air Cambodge, the hospital in the northern Malaysian island, join hands to make the unaffordable affordable to the families.

Rotary has set aside US$100,000 to cover the cost of 50 surgeries, the government had waved passport fees of US$150 each and the national airline has agreed provide free flights between Siem Reap, Phnom Pehn, Kuala Lumpur and return.

The hospital will take care of travel from Kuala Lumpur to Penang and back, board, lodging and other non-medical expenses.

The beneficiaries are from the Angkor Hospital here.

The hospital, founded by a Japanese photographer touched by the plight of young Cambodians whose lives could change with medical and health care, offers help for those who need it.

RAC’s Chief Operating Officer S. Murugesu, says of the airline’s decision to help: "In this instance, we feel inclined to play our role as a responsible corporate citizen as this is a truly deserving cause."

In Penang, the head of the hospital, Teddric J. Mohr praised the joint Cambodian-Malaysian airline for support as the main local sponsor.

The gift of life is now its second year.

It started with the Penang Adventist Hospital examining 29 children at the Angkor Hospital and selecting 19 as suitable for surgery.

Between April and October the following year, they were taken to Penang, successfully operated, and returned.

Recently, it sent another team, which screened 76 children between two months and 15 years, and selected 45 who could successfully undergo surgery.

Cambodian Children To Receive Free Surgery (May 3, 2001)Four Cambodian children will board a royal Air Cambodge plane in Siem Reap today for a trip to Malaysia that could save their lives.

The children, patients of the Angkor Hospital for Children, will receive open heart surgery at the Penang Adventist Hospital (PAH) in Pulau Pinang. The surgeries are made possible through the Gift of Life program, launched in 1999, which enables about 60 children to be treated at PAH.

The girl, 5, and boys, aged 8 months to 15 years, are expected to be in Malaysia for two to three weeks, Jon Morgan, Angkor Hospital executive director, said, “Once you fix that detect in the heart, these children start to thrive within days,” he said.

This year, Royal Air Cambodge is donating $100,000 worth of plane tickets for trips, and the Cambodian governments has agreed to donate passports for parents and the children.

The parents are rice farmers who earn less than $20 per month, Morgan said.

“It’s very confusing and emotionally draining for the parents and children,” he said. They worry about the surgery, but also deal with flights , immigration procedures and culture shock, Morgan said. “Siem Reap is the biggest city they’ve ever seen,” he said.

Hospital staff is accompanying the group on its journey.

Until last week, when the Phnom Penh Heart Center opened, Cambodia had no modern cardiology facility, which made it difficult, if not impossible, for children to get surgery in the country. A fifth child who was supposed to travel today recently died.

The Gift Of Life program was born out of a chance meeting between Angkor hospital staff and Teddric Mohr, PAH chief executive officer and a member of the civic organization Rotary International has pledged $100,000 to the Gift Of Life program.

Four Cambodian Children To Get New Lease Of Life (May 5, 2001)BAYAN LEPAS, Fri: Four Cambodian children with heart problems will be given a new lease of life, thanks to medical sponsorship by Rotary International’s Gift of Life 2 project and Penang Adventist Hospital.

The children, aged between nine months and 13 years arrived in Penang yesterday for open heart surgery to be conducted over the next few days.

Hospital president Teddric Jon Mohr said in two weeks, the children will be on their way back to Cambodia.

The Gift Of Life 2 is a joint project between the Rotary Club of Penang and the hospital to enable children between one and 18 years to receive free open heart surgery.

"The hospital provides medical services for this project at a substantially subsidised fee and it has its own heart fund," he said.

Mohr said the project gives priority to Malaysians, over children from South East Asian nations.

To-date, four Malaysians, two Indonesians and 16 Cambodian children have been successfully operated on at the hospital under the project.

"Two more Malaysians will undergo heart surgery under the project later this year," he said.

Rotary club president Nutan Shah said more donations are needed for the project to continue sponsoring these unfortunate children.

Donations, which are tax exempted, could be made to The Rotary Club of Penang, Gift of Life 2 Account, c/o 7, Kelawei road, 10250 Penang.
