Diabetes-The Silent Killer
by RSBC | Bangkok Hospital Medical Center

Diabetes is caused when people are having higher than normal levels of sugar in the bloodstream. Bodily organs can be at risk of failure if your blood-sugar level is too high. Blindness, kidney failure, heart and brain disease, even amputation of the feet can occur if diabetes is left untreated. There are two main causes, insulin resistance and pancreas malfunction.

Type 1 Diabetes is typically found in newborns and young children whereby the genes shut off the development of the pancreas. While Type 2 diabetes indicates a resistance to insulin and is commonly found in those over the age of 40. However, it seems like a diabetes epidemic is just around the corner with people as young as 22 now being diagnosed with the disease.

There are several reasons why people suffer from diabetes later in life. However, with proper medication, a good diet, regular exercise and a reduction of stress, diabetes can be controlled,

For those with a history of diabetes in the family, Don't wait for the symptoms to appear if there's a history of it in your family. Here at Bangkok Hospital Medical Center we have a service to treat pre-diabetes - that’s if your blood sugar count is higher than 126 mg/dL. It is reversible if caught early enough, but if you pass this stage then you will be taking insulin injection for the rest of your life.

Fortunately the delivery of insulin has come along way and injections are not the only method now being used. Today there are now many methods of delivering insulin. Diabetes patients can take insulin orally with a pill, by inhaling a spray or through the use of an insulin pump.
