First are the patients traveling to Bangkok for a combined visit of leisure and LASIK at TRSC and the other group is traveling to Bangkok only for LASIK treatment. Treatments & Prices

TRSC is a full refractive surgery center. Apart from LASIK, we also provide other means of vision correction.

Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK)

LASIK is a surgical procedure to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism that utilizes the Microkeratome to create a corneal "flap" of about one-third of the total corneal thickness. The excimer laser is then used to reshape the exposed middle layer of the cornea. The flap is finally put back to assume a new shape created by the excimer laser.

PRK

PRK was the original laser refractive surgery and at one time was the most common available. It was introduced in the 1980's and even today it continues to demonstrate a high level of safety and effectiveness. PRK became less common by the end of the 1990's with the introduction of LASIK. Despite LASIK's shortened recovery time, PRK remains an option with its own set of advantages and may at times be suggested instead of LASIK. Unlike LASIK, a flap is not created during PRK. Instead, the cornea is treated directly with the excimer laser, altering its shape to provide the needed prescription.

Near Vision (NV) LASIK

Starting at approximately 38 years old, most people will begin to notice that reading and other near tasks are not as easy as they once were. Focusing up close becomes more difficult. By the mid 40s, many must struggle to read a menu and are unable to read a price tag at a store without using reading glasses. For these people there is now a choice that can decrease their dependence on glasses and can help them see both near and far.

NV LASIK is a new form of LASIK treatment for people with presbyopia (age-related near vision problems). Unlike typical LASIK surgery, only one eye is treated. This eye is given a small amount of near-sightedness for reading and near work. This allows the recipient to live a normal life without needing to carry a pair of glasses everywhere they go for even simple tasks such as looking at a menu.

Phakic Intraocular Lenses (Phakic IOL)

Phakic intraocular lens is a special type of lens designed to correct vision in the same way as contact lenses except they are placed permanently in the eye. The term phakic means that the natural lens in the eye is not removed. IOL stands for IntraOcular Lens which are small lens implants. Therefore, the term Phakic IOL means an artificial lens which is implanted inside the eye, leaving the eye's natural lens in place. Phakic IOLs are often used to correct vision in patients unsuitable for LASIK (thin corneas, high refractive errors, etc). There are different types of phakic intraocular lens such as the implantable collamer lens (ICL) and the phakic refractive lens (PRL).

Cataract Surgery

Cataract is a deterioration of the natural lens due to age which causes it to become progressively cloudy, milky, yellowish or brownish cataract. The light passing through to the retina is partially blocked and this results in unclear image. Left untreated, a cataract can become so dense that it causes blindness. In fact, cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world. In Cataract surgery, the natural lens is removed and replaced with a new lens. The treatment is performed as a day surgery procedure, patients are not required to stay overnight in a hospital.

There are several new models of intraocular lenses but the most popular is the foldable one. The lens can be folded and passed through the tiny 3.5 millimeters incision. After the insertion, the intraocular lens will slowly unfold and stay permanently stable in the eye. The intraocular lens, made from special and safe material, replaces the natural cloudy lens after aspiration of the cataract. The intraocular lens implantation can enhance the sharpness of natural vision. Patients may still need glasses for reading. The ophthalmologist will prescribe the appropriate reading glasses, if needed.

Qualifications, Accreditations & Certifications

Dr. Ekktet Chansue was the first surgeon to perform LASIK in Thailand, and probably in Asia, in 1994. In 1989, Dr. Chansue became the first ophthalmologist from Southeast Asia to be invited to join ORBIS International, a non-profit organization whose mission is to help combat world blindness utilizing its DC-8 airplane converted to a teaching eye hospital. His special interest in cornea and refractive surgery led to the determination to give the miracles of clear vision to all inflicted with sight problems.

Dr.Sukanda Swasdibutra is a graduate of Mahidol University, Faculty of Medicine, Bangkok, Thailand. She completed a residency in ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital. Dr.Sukanda completed a clinical fellowship at Excimer Laser Vision Center, Queensland, Australia. She served five years in Metta Pacharak Hospital as a Refractive Surgery Specialist. She is recognized as “The First Surgeon to perform LASIK in Government Hospital”. She has performed thousands of refractive surgery procedures.

Dr.Sabong Srivannaboon graduated from Faculty of Medicine (Honors), Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand in 1993. After graduating, he completed a residency in Ophthalmology at Siriraj Hospital. He completed his fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at Tulane Medical School, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA and he also completed the fellowship from University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. Dr. Sabong has performed thousands of refractive surgery procedures. He also participates in several international meetings among the ophthalmologists worldwide as a lecturer and a visitor. He has served as an assistant professor in ophthalmology at Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital and Refractive Surgery Specialist at TRSC.

Dr.Pichit Naripthaphan graduated from Mahidol University, Faculty of Medicine, Bangkok, Thailand. He completed a residency in Ophthalmology, Department of Medicine, Ministry of Public Health. Dr.Pichit completed Automated Lamella Keratoplasty: C-LASIK Course in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. He also completed fellowship at Estelle Doheny Eye Foundation, Department of Ophthalmology,USC Medical School, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. Dr.Pichit is now Chief of Refractive surgeries and Contact Lens Unit, Rajvithi Hospital, Ministry of Public Health. He is now also Chief of Rajvithi Hospital’s LASIK Center. He is recognized as “The first Thai surgeon to perform BI-OPTICS (Phacoemulsification+LASIK) procedure”.

Dr.Pavika Thammano graduated with Honors from the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand and was a resident in ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital. She completed a fellowship in Cornea & Refractive Surgery, Ramathibodi Hospital. More recently, Dr.Pavika completed a fellowship in Cornea at Cornea Consultant, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Now many who know TV / radio personality Jennifer Su for her hats have been surprised of late to see her at social galas in the thick glasses which make her look more like a geeky professor than a glamorous anchor for TV Channel 11’s Newsline. Jennifer recently followed the example of other famous celebrities in discarding her contact lenses and having LASIK eye surgery. LASIK is the most advanced laser vision correction surgery today and is capable of correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.  The ability of the modern excimer laser to remove tissue with sub-micron precision has created a sudden interest and over a million people will have LASIK performed this year.

Over half of the world’s population is affected by these traits and are reliant on spectacles or contact lenses to view the world clearly.  Glasses can be bothersome and uncomfortable while contact lenses are equally problematic.  They dry out your eyes, are sometimes painful, and starve your eyes of precious oxygen.  With contact lenses there is also the constant and sight-threatening risk of infection (about 1 in 2000 per year) which increases with poor hygiene.  With improved technology and greater experience, LASIK surgery has now become far safer than contact lens wear.  When performed by a corneal expert, the one-time sterile procedure has been shown to be much healthier for the eyes than decades of uncomfortable contact lens use. 

During LASIK, the surgeon creates a corneal “flap” with a cutting instrument, called a microkeratome.  The flap is lifted and the underlying cornea is reshaped using a “cold” excimer laser.  The flap can then be carefully replaced and the tissue heals itself within a couple days without sutures, adopting the new shape and providing improved vision within weeks and sometimes overnight.  Overseas patients can stay in Bangkok just five days for the whole process, including the preoperative exam, the surgery itself, the one day and the 1 week postoperative exam.

How many days are required for my trip in Thailand?

We recommend approximately 5-7 days in Bangkok in order to complete the initial eye examination, the LASIK surgery, (you can actually have both the pre-op eye exam and the surgery on the same day), and both the 1-day and 1-week follow-ups. The 1-week follow-up can be from 5-10 days after surgery. The rest of the routine check-ups can be completed with an ophthalmologist in your home country. A sample itinerary could be as follows:
