The obesity is a disease that is reaching alarming numbers, to such a point of being considered to be an epidemic. According to the world organization of health, more than 1,000 million persons in the world have some degree of overweight or obesity, and of following this trend in the year 2015 they will be 1,500 million.

According to the National Institute of Health of the United States (NIH), 20% or more over the ideal weight is the point in which the overweight turns into a risk for the health. The overweight also is related to the appearance of chronic diseases that in some cases have disability and even the death as a result. The origin of the obesity is due to multiple factors; therefore its treatment must include a series of medical, nutritional and psychological aspects.

Do I qualify for the surgery?

The parameters that we use to indicate a bariatric surgery are the established ones worldwide by the National Institute of Health of the United States, the society of Gastrointestinal Surgeons and the American Society of Bariatric Surgery.

• Age Between 18 and 25 years.
• To have an equal or higher BMI of 40.
• To have an equal or higher BMI of 35 with presence of two or more diseases associated to the obesity, the most common are the arterial hypertension, diabetes, hypercolesterolemy, hypertrigliceridemy, sleep apnea, etc.
• To have completed unsuccessfully other treatments supervised and documented to go down weight.
• Psychological and/or psychiatric evaluation that documents the absence of severe psychopathology.
• Other potentially corrigible reasons for obesity must be rejected (e.g. Endocrine).
• To suffer from obesity for almost 5 years.
• Consensus of the multidisciplinary team.
