Panama is a Republic with a democratic government. It has a surface of 75,517 km2, situated between parallels 7º and 10º north, and 77º and 83º west. Its borders are: The Caribbean Sea to the North, to the South the Pacific Ocean, to the East with Colombia, and to the West with Costa Rica. It’s surrounded by two coasts, the Caribbean Coast with a length of 1.287,7 km and, the Pacific Coast with 1.700,6 km. In the Caribbean you could find up to 1000 islands, and in the Pacific around 500.
The majority of them are coral islands of volcanic origin, with an exhuberant vegetation and white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. Its climate is tropical, with yearly precipitations of more than 2500 mm and with a dry season from mid December to mid April and, a rainy season from late April to early December, which produces a range of temperature between the 18º and 30º C.
Population
The total population of the Republic of Panama is 3.2 million inhabitants (National Population Census of 2000), with a potential population of around 500,000 people, which a mixture of races, nationalities, cultures and religions (Jews, Chinese, Arabs, Spanish, Greeks, Americans, Italians, Colombians, Venezuelans, etc.), favored historically by our geographical position. The majority of its white population is descendant from European countries and from the USA, which were introduced with the construction of the Panama Canal. The mixed-race or ‘mestizos’ is a mixture of indigenous tribes, Spanish people and Blacks which represent the majority. The ethnic groups, Kuna Yala, Ngobe-Bugle, Emberas, Wounaan, Teribes and Bokotas, are distributed all around the country. Our Afro-Antilles are originated from the Antilles and from the workers for the construction of the railroad and the Panama Canal.
The majority of Panamanians are Catholics, nevertheless freedom of religion is respected and varies among the different ethnic groups, so you can see the Chinesse Temples, Mezquites, Sinagoges, Protestant churches, Christians and others.
The official language is Spanish, but English is spoken as if it was our second language. The minority groups speak separate each one of the languages, so you can find a wide variety of languages in Panama.
