Chemical Peel Skin Care Treatments

Overview
Chemical peels are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed every year by millions of men and women around the world. Reasons for obtaining a chemical peel include the reduction of fine lines, improvement of hyper pigmentation, reducing the appearance of slight acne scars or other facial marks and even reducing the effects of overexposure to the sun. Various forms of chemical peels are available, among those that either contain a single chemical such as glycolic acid, or one that contains a variety of chemicals. Depending on skin tone and needs, chemical peels come three stage levels: superficial, medium or deep.

Chemical Peel Procedure
Quick and efficient, chemical peels can be performed in the comfort of a doctor's office.  Once a consultation has been completed, the physician will decide what type of chemical peel will show the best results according to skin type, issue and desired results. For those who need a deep chemical process, an anesthesia will be administered to ease slight discomfort during the procedure. The entire process takes less than 30 minutes, though it can take up to three weeks for complete recovery.

During the chemical peel procedure, the doctor applies a layer of the chemical solution to the facial skin. Once the solution is applied, the chemicals begin to "peel" the outer layer of the skin which contains dead skin away, which results in a new "fresh" layer of skin. Once the new skin is exposed, skin cells begin to heal and promote smoother, more radiant looking skin. Some individuals might experience a warm or cool sensation on the skin during the process, but this feeling only lasts for a short time.

Once the procedure is complete, the physician will instruct patients on how to promote and enhance the healing process. Avoiding makeup or sun exposure is required for at least two weeks. Those who go outside must put on at least a sun block with a SPF of 15 or more. While everyone has different skin, chemical peel results vary among patients depending on skin type and strength of the peel solution. For those who use a lighter solution, peeling and redness might be minimal for a few days, while those who used a deeper solution will experience more intense peeling, scabs and even blisters for the first few weeks after the chemical peel. Swelling might also occur, which is a fairly common side effect.

Some physicians will prescribe a cream or ointment to help with healing, especially if there is a reaction to the chemical process. In addition to being careful with new facial skin, the physician will also offer tips on a daily skin care regimen in order to prolong effects of the chemical peel.

Benefits of a Chemical Peel
Chemical peels are ideal for men or women who want to appear more refreshed, as well as those who wish to reduce the look of fine wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, and slight scarring. Those who use chemical peels as a part of their skin care regimen find that their skin is smoother, more youthful and the overall appearance is improved.

Cost of Chemical Peels
The cost of a chemical peel commonly includes the basic cost for a specific type of peel, any necessary anesthesia, and an after-procedure skin care regimen. In the United States, a single treatment costs approximately $200-$600, while in Costa Rica, prices are approximately $175-$250. Prices in Bolivia range from $320-$390. Chemical peels and other elective skin care procedures and treatments are not covered by medical insurance plans in the U.S., so medical travelers often choose foreign destinations for such care.

Choosing a Doctor
Choose a dermatologist who has extensive experience with chemical peels and other anti-aging procedures. In addition to finding a dermatologist, consumers should know that a licensed esthetician or registered nurse is also able to perform light to medium chemical peels within a doctor's office. However, those who need a deeper peel should visit a dermatologist. Check out their before and after photos of patients who have undergone similar procedures, and ask any questions about the chemical peel itself, including strength and side effects. Review any and all qualifications or certification, as well as any support that might be given during the healing process.
