Common Dental Implant Types

Dental implants generally fall into one of two basic categories:

• Endosteal implants: attached directly to the bone. They provide an anchor for artificial teeth within jawbone structures.

• Subperiosteal implants: a metal framework is attached to the jawbone underneath the gum tissue.

Root-form titanium dental implant, are a type of endosteal implants which are placed directly into the jawbone structure and attached to this structure with nails, screws, or cones. Titanium dental implants are usually for those with minimal (or medium) tooth loss; but of course to make sure, you will have to consult a specialist. The other dental implants' types (sub-periosteal, plate-form, ramus-frame) are utilized for a multitude of artificial teeth insertion procedures.

A subperiosteal implant is usually placed over the jaw and not in it, reason why it is recommended for individuals who don't have enough bone left, and indeed there is no way to support a root form implant. A plate-form implant is a type of dental implant which consists of a metal piece with prongs on one side placed on top of the jawbone.

And finally, the ramus-frame implant, which is used for those with thin jawbones. Ramus-frame implant, are placed at the back of the mouth and along the chin. Even when they are clearly visible, are options due the superior strength and structure they can provide. 

The Dental Implant Procedure

Dental Implants Procedure Abroad is usually a 2-3 steps process and it requires 2 trips to the medical tourism destination chosen.

In the standard dental implant procedure, and as this is an out-patient procedure, local anesthesia is usually adequate. During the procedure, small holes are drilled into the jaw site where tooth has been lost or removed in order to insert a titanium screw that will hold the dental implant in place.

This hole will be slowly and carefully enlarged to allow the implants to be inserted. The implant site is allowed to heal before the new artificial tooth is attached. This procedure may take from three to six months to heal. After that time period, your dentist will complete the procedure by placing a crown restoration. The healing process will depend on many factors such as your jawbone structure, age, and general oral health.

Dental implants are inserted by dentists licensed in implant dentistry, regardless of country of origin. This procedure be performed any time after adolescence or when bone growth is complete.
