Expensive, they are here to treat mainly foreign patients
by Hindustan Times, New Delhi | Artemis Health

With a broken hip, 83 YEAR – OLD Ashok Sharma spent more than 24 hours in his bed, waiting while her family arranged for a mobile X-ray machine. “Despite a swollen, broken waist he refused to go to a hospital. Which is way we wanted an X-ray conducted at home but none of the hospitals here had a mobile machine,” said Mayank Sharma, his grandson. The only government hospital in Gurgaon is in Civil Lines area near Sector 15 and has near-negligible facilities. “We did not want to go to the government hospital as it does not have drugs, equipment and usually doctors are not available after 2 p.m.

But private hospital are equally bad,” added Sharma. When the family could not arrange for a mobile X-ray, they took the patient to the nearest hospital, Paras. “Doctors there put him in the ICU even before conducting basic examinations like an X-ray. They did not even know why he was there, but they said he would be admitted for three days and we had to make the payment upfront. We then sifted him to a hospital in Delhi,” said Sharma.

OF AIRPORT, TOURISTS & DOCTORS….

For those residing in posh, up market DLF apartments, three super-speciality hospitals have set shop in the neighborhood in the last three months. But if you thought healthcare facilities in Gurgaon was the main concern luring these hospitals, think again. What makes the area a hot property is the potential of catering mainly to foreign patients and its proximity to the airport. “Gurgaon is a good location because of its closeness to the airport and we are mainly focusing on medical tourism,” Shivinder Mohan Singh, CEO, Fortis Healthcare, had said while announcing the group’s flagship hospital in the area. “This is a seven-star facility and some people might find the prices a little steep,” he had said. Besides the two Medicities, which will provide high-end care, three multi-speciality hospitals – Max, Artemis and Paras – have set up shop, within 5 km from one another.

Max Healthcare is the ‘neighbor hospital’, a 120 bed set up equipped with tertiary care back in its Saket branch. “In critical cases, we transfer the patient to the main hospital after giving him / her primary life saving treatment,” said Dr. Atamjot Grewal, head, Clinical Support, Max Healthcare. The OPD charges in Max range from Rs. 300 to Rs. 600 (for senior consultants). Artemis Health Services, promoted by Apollo Tyres, is a state-of-the-art hospital where laptops have replaced bulky medical files. Since the hospital has just started functioning, it is consciously priced below Fortis and Max. “Our OPD charges are Rs. 300 flat and we do not charge the patient who come for a follow-up within a week’s time. What sets us apart is that we have the best technology,” said Dr. Kushagra Katariya, CEO, Artemis Health Sciences.
