About - Dr. Baris Akin
After graduating from Ankara University's medical school and general surgery residency, Dr. Baris Akin completed the transplant surgery fellowship program at Ohio State University, one of the top ten centers in the United States for kidney and pancreas transplants.
At Ohio State University, he assisted in 270 kidney transplants, 260 laparoscopic donor nephrectomies, and 55 pancreas transplants. In 2004, he received the "Young Investigator Award" at the American Transplant Meeting. He specialized in advanced laparoscopic kidney transplant procedures. He was certified as a licensed transplant surgeon by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons to perform kidney and pancreas transplants in the United States.
Prof Baris Akin returned to Istanbul in 2004 as MD Professor of Surgery and established one of the first kidney transplantation programs at Florence Nightingale Hospital regarding the organizational scope of the Ohio State University Transplant Program. During his studies in Turkey, he performed over 1200 kidney transplants, with a first-year success rate of 97.8% and a five-year success rate of 92.1%.
His program, in particular, provides active blood group incompatible kidney transplantation and a paired donation program for international couples. In Turkey, he performed the first laparoscopic hand-assisted donor nephrectomy procedure. He developed a novel donor nephrectomy surgical technique (retro-peritonoscopic hand-assisted technique) that reduces the risk of abdominal organ injuries and adhesions.
Since 2009, he has performed over 1000 retro-peritonoscopic donor nephrectomy cases and has presented his surgical experience at international meetings in the United States and Europe. He committed himself to national and international training. He has taught the LIDO course at ESOT since 2016 and the Hesperis course in 2019.
Since 2017, Prof. Baris Akin has presided over International Transplant Network Courses and Meetings. He is currently the Vice-Chair of the European Society of Transplantation's European Kidney Transplant Association (EKITA Board) and the Turkish delegate for transplant surgery at the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) He is a general surgery professor and the director of the kidney and pancreas transplantation programs at Istanbul's Demiroglu Bilim University Florence Nightingale Hospital.

I had two surgeries with the diagnosis of Breast Cancer. My surgery was performed by Dr. Cengiz Dİbekoğlu. I thank him. I was very sad and devastated when I went to Gayrettepe for chemotherapy, our esteemed teacher Prof. Çetin Ordu, and although the chemotherapy was difficult at first due to the effects of the drugs, I could reach him at any time with his knowledge, interest and care. It is very important. I would like to thank him and his entire team, especially nurse Dilek and nurse Zeynep. They are a nice team that does their job very well. I understood from the first examination and chemotherapy that I was in safe hands. I am glad they exist. May God not show their shortcomings. Thank you very much.
