Dr Murat Üstün has made a commitment to every patient's well-being and safety, a goal that is also pursued by our staff and medical professionals that are at your service, this is part of the excellence equation. Dr Murat Üstün and the Istanbul Bariatric Center team perform medical procedures, including gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric band, and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. While performed differently, all of these procedures help patients lose weight by limiting how much food the stomach can hold as well as the patient’s absorption of nutrients.

Surgeries are performed at a JCI accredited Acibadem Hospital. The Joint Commission International works to improve safety at health care facilities domestically and globally. Accreditation ensures facilities are up to date, physicians are board-certified, plans for follow-up care are in place, risks of traveling after surgery are outlined, and more.

Curriculum Vitae
Dr Murat Ustun was born in Istanbul in 1969. He received education at Ege University Faculty of Medicine between 1986 and 1992. In 1996, he became a General Surgery Specialist. Laparoscopic surgery had just begun in Turkey and has been his major area of interest in his surgical career. In this period again, he completed certification training on Hospital Management and Total Quality Management. Between 1996 and 1999, he played an active role in the establishment of the transplant clinic at SSK Ankara High Specialty Hospital, and worked particularly in the fields of renal transplantation and laparoscopic surgery.
In the meantime, he decided to focus on advanced laparoscopic surgery techniques, and continued his training in line with this decision after specialist training. Between 1999 and 2001, he went to SSK Zonguldak Regional Hospital and established the first laparoscopic surgery unit of the regional hospital. He provided the opportunity of doing laparoscopic surgery for the first time in the region. He conducted modernization studies in the operating room and ensured the sterilization principles to be adopted.
He resigned from public hospital in 2001, with intent to continue his studies in the private sector, and to carry out his personal development in line with his own desire. Since 2001 he has worked in the private healthcare sector in Istanbul. During this period, information technology became one of his most important areas of interest. He managed the endoscopy and laparoscopic surgery unit in a private hospital group for a period of about 3 years. In that period, he gained significant experience in the field of endoscopy, by performing more than 2,000 colonoscopies and about 3,500 gastroscopies.
During his career in the private sector, he also tended towards bariatric surgery besides endoscopic diagnosis and treatment methods. In 2004, he worked with Dr.Vincent Frering on laparoscopic bariatric surgery at Polyclinique du Beaujolais in France, the place where the world’s first laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed in 2004. Since that year, he worked at three different centers in France. When he returned back, he began to perform both endoscopic
intragastric balloon procedures and laparoscopy adjustable gastric band operations. After he decided to focus on bariatric surgery, he visited a variety of centers in Frankfurt, Vienna, Hamburg, Athens, Madrid, and Salzburg, and worked there with an intent to enhance his experience.
Between 2010 and 2011, he served as a coordinator during the establishment of Turkey’s first Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Center. He still works in the private sector.
In parallel with the decline in the use of gastric band surgery in the world, he became one of the first few surgeons who perform advanced techniques such as laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and laparoscopic gastric bypass in our country. He became one of the leading physicians in his field, as a result of his increased experience in this field as well as the complication rates, which are at the world’s average level. For this reason, he became a reference center for complication and revision surgeries.
He is the person who has applied certain surgical procedures for the first time in our country, such as laparoscopic gastric plication, endoscopic gastric plication (Apollo), laparoscopic single anastomosis duodenoileostomy (SADI-S) and laparoscopic gastric loop bipartition. Besides bariatric and metabolic surgery, his most important area of professional interest is endoscopic treatment methods. He is the person who has performed the EsophyX procedure in reflux treatment for the first time in our country. He also performs endoscopic reflux treatment procedures such as MUSE, GERD-X and Stretta.
Dr. Üstün believes that knowledge grows when shared has been providing his colleagues with training on Bariatric and metabolic surgery for 4 years, as the Key Opinion Leader of COVIDIEN, in the field of Bariatric surgery. Approximately 35 surgeons have been trained in such workshops held 9 times, and then have begun to serve in the field of bariatric surgery. During these training sessions, a large number of live broadcasts were done. In one of the sessions, a new record was set for surgical operations done within 8 hours during a live broadcast watched in our country, and throughout the airtime, two sleeve gastrectomy operations, one gastric bypass surgery and one SADI-S surgery were performed.
Üstün believing that advanced technology will make a great contribution to the perfection in surgery has also broken new grounds with his technological practices such as using stapler with iDrive Battery Pack in sleeve gastrectomy for the first time, using V-Loc suture in bariatric surgery for the first time, performing the first sleeve gastrectomy with the Storz Spies laparoscopy system, and performing three-dimensional laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for the first time and 4k sleeve gastrectomy first time.
Surgeon Dr.Murat Üstün continues his studies on Obesity and Bariatric Surgery partially in London and partially in Istanbul. He owned his center, Istanbul Bariatric Centre in Istanbul.

The hospital was beautiful and brand new, it looked like a luxury hotel. I would highly recommend. Thank you again!

I would like to thank the doctor and clinic for this incredible change!

My friend from elementary school and I had the same weight problems. He worked in Turkey and he had a weight-loss surgery in Istanbul performed by Dr. Murat Üstün. One day, we met at a wedding party and took a picture together. After seeing that picture I felt really bad about myself. Having the same weight problems since elementary school, he had lost weight and I still weighed around 120 kgs. Now, it’s been 9 months since my surgery and I’ve already lost 60 kgs. I would like to thank Dr. Murat Üstün and Istanbul Bariatric Center for this incredible change.

    Overall a fantastic experience!

I approached Dr. Murat Ustun after deciding on weight loss surgery at age 56 mainly due to taking charge of obesity-related conditions: Diabetes, Sleep Apnoea hypertension, cholesterol and gout. My non-related condition is osteoarthritis which is physically debilitating. In addition, surgery in the UK can take 2-3 years on the NHS due to an almost impossible tier system designed to put people off surgery by my local NHS trust in South London.

Dr. Murat agreed to meet me in London after sending me two quotes for two different hospitals in Istanbul, Turkey where he performs his surgeries. The price was to include surgery, transfers, hotel and hospital stay for me and my wife. What attracted me to Dr. Ustun was his reassurance that should any issues arise on my return, he would arrange treatment within the UK by the NHS. This gave me a further reassurance in him. He also has his home in South London.

We decided a date for surgery for a mini gastric bypass since it had only one connection minimizing future risks. I read that this procedure was first conducted by an American surgeon Robert Rutledge.

We arrived in Istanbul and were met at the Airport and transferred to our hotel promptly. The following morning, a Sunday was a rest day. My wife and I toured a bit of Istanbul on a gloriously sunny day. We had been to Istanbul before but were in awe of this city. The gleaming Bosphorus is a very awesome sight indeed. On reaching our hotel and checking my phone, Dr. Ustun had twice visited our hotel and waited as much as 30 mins on each occasion. What a fella! Later on that Sunday, my blood was taken at my hotel for a full pre-op analysis.

We were to leave the hotel located very near the hospital and were chauffeured to the Acibadem Taksim hospital. Pre-op physical examinations, UltraSound was done and an endoscopy was to be carried out whilst I was under anesthesia. Anesthesia/intubation was to be particularly challenging due to my arthritis in the neck but Dr. Ustun had assured me that he'd have the best Anaesthetist to overcome this hurdle.

My surgery went unnoticed and uneventful as far as I was concerned. However, my wife was super stressed and was reassured at all times by a very courteous hospital staff. My discharge was on the fourth day, a day later due to a slightly poor kidney function post-op which was dealt with promptly due to twice daily visits by doctors from Dr. Ustun's team and his routine daily visits.

Overall a fantastic experience. I would like to thank Dr. Ustun and his entire team of coordinators, doctors, dietitians etc.

I would also like to suggest minor improvements that can be made to further improve patient experience:

    1. To indicate exactly what's not included in the price such as hotel meals. I did find fending for myself fourth-day post-op. ( My wife had flown back the previous day of my discharge due to work commitments). It would be great for patients to be provided with the broth soup since the hotel did not understand requirements.
    2. Also, that prescription drugs will need to be paid for post -op such as blood thinning injections and various drugs.

Needless to say, the above points are minor. Dr. Murat Ustun overall is a super caring and a dedicated surgeon who I have no doubt become your friend and who will promptly respond to your concerns via Whatsapp as will his team!

I have not used my CPAP breathing machine since my surgery and do not miss it one bit! My focus is now on a healthier lifestyle and hoping my diabetes will be in remission and weight loss help my mobility. I have lost 11kg from my pre-op and post-op diet!

Good luck to all those considering Bariatric Surgery and looking to bring out the real you hiding within yourself.

He answered all the questions I had and really cared about me

I’ve been having weight issues pretty much my entire life. Gone through countless diets, tried all fancy names you can think of these days. Every time I lost kilos, I ended gaining them back and every time it was harder to get back on a diet and see results.

I went for a gastric band 9 years ago but that didn’t help a lot. I was constantly hungry but wasn’t able to eat. Eventually, the band became just part of my body, not restricting me at all, it was just there.

I read a lot about the gastric bypass surgery and decided to remove the band and give that a try. Did some research and came across Dr Murat Ustun reviews on the internet. Spoke to him on the phone and he gave me that confidence that I needed.

Everything was arranged great, we were very well taken care of and I am really happy I made this decision with Dr Ustun. He answered all the questions I had and really cared about me. Fantastic doctor, fantastic team!

The dietitian is still in contact after 8 months of my follow up to ensure everything is ok!

I had the gastric sleeve it was a very good experience from start to finish. I was so nervous and scared. But all staff put me at ease and I had one to one contact with a counsellor who also accompanied me on the day day of surgery. All tests were carried out fast within a day, from X-rays, Cardiology, lungs test to endoscopy and surgery. The hospital care was outstanding. The nurses were on call 24/7 I had a plea sent transfer and stay in the hotel. The dietitian is still in contact after 8 months of my follow up to ensure everything is ok from blood tests to eating and drinking.

I would recommend this. I was 96kg and now 65kg.

I have lost quite a lot of weight and feel more confident!

I really appreciate the care and support offered. I was told prior to having my gastric sleeve - what it entails including the healing process. I was supported after my surgery by the doctor and a dietitian.

Since having my gastric sleeve surgery, I have lost quite a lot of weight and feel more confident. I was told about loose skin being left due to weight loss and indeed I do have some loose skin. I am considering thigh uplift and back uplift to tackle my current loosen skin issue. The surgeon has recommended that I wait until my weight loss has finished before undergoing any further surgical procedures.
