Pre-Marital Screening
What is Pre-Marital screening?
Pre-marital screening consists of a comprehensive group of tests. It is meant especially for those who are planning to get married. The tests are designed to identify potential health problems that may have an impact on one's fertility and also to detect some of the hereditary diseases and infections.

Why is Pre-Marital screening important?
Many people are not aware of their state of health. An individual might look healthy but he/she may have undetected health problems or be a silent carrier of infectious or hereditary diseases. A routine blood test can reveal such conditions so that necessary precautions or treatments can be initiated.

Pre-marital screening enables an individual to :

  • To assess the general health status.
  • To detect presence of infectious diseases e.g. HIV and Hepatitis B infections.
  • To screen for common hereditary conditions that may affect future offspring e.g. Thalassaemia.
  • To screen for any fertility problems.
  • Raffles Pre-Marital Package

Flu-Vaccination
Keep Flu at Bay . Get Your Flu Vaccinations Now!
Influenza, or the flu, is a viral infection affecting the respiratory tract. In Singapore, flu infections occur all year round but it is also known to increase during the year-end.

A severe case of flu can lead to pneumonia and other serious complications, like bronchitis, sinusitis, ear infection and meningitis. It is thus important to take preventive measures.

Flu vaccines are available which can be administered as a preventive measure to protect you from the flu virus. A vaccination can offer immunity to the flu for up to one year.

It is especially recommended for the traveller going to areas where there is an outbreak and for persons with reduced immunity (e.g. the elderly, young children and those with chronic diseases and respiratory ailments).

Flu Vaccines, as recommended by the World Health Organization, are available at Raffles Medical clinics at the price of $23 (before GST) wef 1 October 2008.

Raffles Heart Centre
Raffles Heart Centre provides one-stop specialist care for the diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases, and for individuals concerned with maintaining a healthy heart

The four most prevalent heart diseases are:

Hyperlipidemia (High Cholesterol Level)
It is an elevation of your bad cholesterol level and triglycerides in the blood. There are low density cholesterol (LDL) and high density cholesterol (HDL). Excess LDL cholesterol contributes to the blockage of arteries which may lead to heart attacks.

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
Commonly referred to as "high blood pressure", hypertension is a medical condition in which the blood pressure is chronically elevated. Hypertension has been associated with a higher risk of heart attack or stroke.

Arrhythmia
Arrhythmia is ny disorder of your heart rate or rhythm. It means that your heart beats too quickly, too slowly or with an irregular pattern. Symptoms of arrhythmias include chest pain, shortness of breath, and giddiness.

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
Coronary Artery Disease is usually caused by a condition when cholesterol builds up on the walls of your arteries. This causes the coronary arteries to narrow, blood flow to the heart to decrease, chest pain (stable angina), shortness of breath, heart attack, and other symptoms.

Raffles Heart Centre offers a wide range of diagnostic tests and treatments for heart-related diseases.

Diagnostic Services Include:

Echocardiography (2D Echo)
A form of ultrasound test used to examine the heart structure and heart valve.

Ambulatory Blood Pressure
Monitoring of blood pressure readings over 24 hours while a person is performing daily routine activities.

Dobutamine & Treadmill Stress Echocardiography
This test will provide information regarding your level of exercise tolerance, and the ability of your heart to respond appropriately to an increased workload. It is a more accurate test for the detection of coronary disease than exercise treadmill.

Holter Monitoring
Records the electrical activity of the heart for a 24 hour period of time. This allows detection of any irregularities and/or abnormalities in the heart's rhythm during normal activities.

Tilt Table Test
Useful diagnostic procedure for patients who have symptoms of severe lightheadedness, dizziness or fainting spells.

Transoesophageal Echocardiogram
A special ultrasound test which is used mainly to look for holes and clots in the heart.

Coronary Angiogram
To detect blockages in the arteries to the heart.

Treatments Include:
Angioplasty & Stent Implantation
A thin catheter is passed through a blocked artery with a balloon to open it. It may involve the insertion of a stent.

Cardiac Surgery
This includes Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting and other common congenital and valvular heart surgery

Pacemaker & Automatic Defibrillator Implantation
A small device is implanted to provide the electrical stimulus when the heart's own natural pacemaker does not function

Raffles Internal Medicine Centre
Raffles Internal Medicine Centre offers prevention, diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical sub-specialties. Our focus is on caring for our patient as a whole, and personalising their care and treatment in accordance with individual needs.

Dental

General Dentistry

Scaling & Polishing
Scaling is a meticulous procedure that removes plaque on the tooth surface and embedded within the gum pocket. A little discomfort may be experienced if the cleaning is done slightly below the gum line. After scaling, we will polish off your pearlie whites with polishing paste for a clean feel.

Dental X – Rays
X-ray examinations are a necessary part of complete, comprehensive patient care.

Dental X-rays at Raffles Hospital are all digitized to offer best image quality at lowest radiation exposure to patients. We recommend radiographs for every new patient to determine the present status of your oral health and to help us in your dental treatment planning.

Many diseases of the teeth and surrounding tissues cannot be seen when your dentist examines your mouth, hence an X-ray is required.

An X-ray examination may reveal:

  • small areas of decay between the teeth;
  • presence of periodontal (gum) disease;
  • location of impacted teeth, e.g. wisdom teeth;
  • infections in the bone;
  • abscesses or cysts;
  • developmental abnormalities;
  • some types of tumors
  • Fillings

Composite (white) fillings are mercury-free, plastic material matching natural tooth color used to replace missing parts of a tooth. Since they bond to the tooth, composite fillings restore most of the original strength and natural appearance of the tooth.

Besides offering durability and strength, many patients opt for composite fillings, as they are also more aesthetically pleasant.

Tooth Whitening
The tooth whitening procedure will make your teeth significantly whiter in less than an hour. You can in fact simply sit back and relax during this process.

Almost anyone wishing to lighten his / her teeth can benefit from the treatment, including individuals with severe food, coffee, tobacco or even tetracycline stains. The procedure will not soften or damage enamel.

Our dentist will first conduct a thorough dental examination to ensure booth your teeth and gum tissues are healthy and acceptable for treatment.

The tooth whitening process is normally painless. A very small percentage of people may experience a minor, dull ache following the procedure and temporary sensitivity towards hot and cold drinks.

Taking an analgesic that you normally use for your headache will almost always resolve the feeling. It is best to avoid very hot or cold drinks for the first 24 hours if there is any tooth sensitivity.

Advantages of tooth whitening:

  • A safe, short and simple procedure!
  • Immediate significant results with improvement by an average of 8 shades
  • With regular maintenance, results are long-lasting
  • Safe and comfortable
  • Low sensitivity

Prosthodontics

Crowns
Crowns are designed to make your tooth stronger and improve its appearance. They fit over a tooth like an amour over a body. Crowns are necessary when a tooth is generally broken down and fillings won't solve the problem. If a tooth is cracked, a crown holds the tooth together to seal the cracks so the damage does not get worse. It is also used to support a large filling when there isn't enough of the tooth remaining, protect weak teeth from fracturing, restore fractured teeth, or cover badly shaped or discolored teeth.

A crown can cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn't enough tooth structure left. In most cases, crowns are indicated after a root canal therapy, and are used to protect the devital tooth.

To prepare the tooth for a crown, it is reshaped smaller so that the crown can fit over it. An impression of teeth and gums is made and sent to the lab for the crown fabrication. A temporary crown is fitted over the tooth until the permanent crown is made. On the next visit, the dentist removes the temporary crown and cements the permanent crown onto the tooth.

With proper care crowns normally can last between eight and twelve years. With good oral hygiene however, crowns typically enjoy higher life expectancy. It is important to clean between your crowns and teeth. Flossing is important to remove plaque from the crown area where the gum meets the tooth as it can cause dental decay and gum disease.

Bridges
A missing tooth or several teeth impairs proper speech and lowers aesthetic appeal. Besides dental implants, a bridge is another option that can help restore your smile. It is actually made of several crowns connected together.

Bridges help maintain the shape of your face, as well reduce the stress in your bite by replacing missing teeth.

Sometimes called a fixed partial denture, a bridge replaces missing teeth with artificial teeth. In most cases, bridges are very natural and unnoticeable. They literally bridge the gap where one or more teeth may have been. Unlike a denture that you can take out and clean, only a dentist can remove a fixed bridge.

Bonding
Bonding is a process in which a resin material is applied to a tooth's surface, sculpted to an ideal shape, hardened, and then polished for an ideal smile. This procedure usually can be accomplished in a single visit.

Bonding is often performed in order to fill in gaps or change the color of your teeth. It typically only entails one office visit, and the results may last for several years.

Bonding is more susceptible to staining or chipping than other forms of restoration such as veneers. When teeth are chipped or slightly decayed, bonded composite resins may be the material of choice. Bonding also is used as a tooth-colored filling for small cavities and broken or chipped surfaces.

For larger restorations, bonding may not be suitable and veneers or crowns may be needed.

Veneers
Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain cemented over the front of your teeth to change their color or shape. Veneers are used on teeth with uneven surfaces or are chipped, discolored, unevenly spaced or crooked. They have a longer life expectancy and color stability than bonding, and highly resist permanent staining from coffee, tea, or even cigarette smoking. They are almost always used in “Smile Makeover cases.

Porcelain veneers can mask undesirable defects, such as teeth stained by tetracycline, by an injury, or as a result of a root-canal procedure, and are ideal for masking discolored fillings in front teeth. Patients with gaps between their front teeth or have teeth that are chipped or worn may consider porcelain veneers.

Typically, veneers entail at least three appointments: diagnosis and treatment planning, preparation, and cementation.

During the tooth preparation visit, a local anesthetic may be given to ensure the treatment is painless. The teeth shape is modified and a mould is taken of the teeth, and sent to the laboratory for the fabrication of the veneers. At the final "bonding" visit, the veneers are checked for fit and color before being permanently bonded to the teeth using special light activated adhesives.

Dentures
If you've lost some or all of your natural teeth, whether from periodontal disease, tooth decay or injury, dentures can replace your missing teeth and your smile. Replacing missing teeth will benefit your appearance and your health. Without support from the denture, facial muscles sag, making a person look older. You'll be able to eat and speak better—things that people often take for granted until their natural teeth are lost.

Dentures require approximately three to five visits, depending on the type of denture to be made. During the first appointment, the Denture Specialist (Prosthodontist) first takes measurements and makes models of the patient's jaws. The second visit measures and customizes the bite and height of the denture, after which the patient will return for a third visit for the dentist to note the final preferences to the denture. After all necessary amendments and adjustments, the denture is ready for collection on the fourth visit.

Do note that even if you wear dentures, you still must take good care of your mouth. Brush your gums, tongue and palate every morning with a soft-bristled brush before you insert your dentures to stimulate circulation in your tissues and help remove plaque. All dentures should also be removed and placed in a cup of water before retiring for the night

Endodontics

At Raffles Dental, all our complicated root canal therapy are all performed by Root Canal Specialists (Endodontists).

Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp, the soft tissue inside the root canal, becomes inflamed or infected. The inflammation or infection can have a variety of causes: deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack or chip in the tooth. In addition, an injury to a tooth may cause pulp damage even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.

During endodontic treatment, the Endodontist removes the inflamed or infected pulp, carefully cleans and shapes the inside of the canal, a channel inside the root, then fills and seals the space. Afterwards, you will return to your dentist, who will place a crown or other restoration on the tooth to protect and restore it to full function. After restoration, the tooth continues to function like any other tooth.

Orthodontics
Conventional Braces
Orthodontics does more than just making us look good. With braces, you can:

Chew your food better
Chewing is the first step in digestion. If your teeth are crooked, you will not be able to chew your food properly which can lead to indigestion.
Avoid potential dental problems
Crooked teeth are hard to clean so that people with crooked teeth tend to have more cavities and gum problems than people who have orthodontic treatment. Crooked teeth wear in ways that they should not. This puts extra stress on your teeth, gums and jaw, which can lead to problems later on.
Orthodontics at Raffles Dental are all performed by specialists (Orthodontists).

Invisalign
Invisalign is a new revolutionary treatment option to patients seeking to do orthodontic treatment. Through a series of nearly invisible, completely removable plastic aligners, Invisalign gradually moves your teeth to give you back the beautiful smile you have always wanted – without brackets or wires. You can still enjoy all your favourite foods, and brush and floss normally!

Invisalign is an appropriate treatment option for teens and adults whose teeth have grown in fully, including second molars. To see how Invisalign can work, please call our office to schedule a initial screening with our orthodontist. As always, we look forward to discussing any questions or concerns you may have regarding any aspect of your dental health.

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Wisdom Tooth Surgery
Wisdom teeth that are healthy and properly positioned can be a valuable asset to the mouth. Unfortunately, this is not often the case, and problems develop that require their removal. For example, when the jaw is not large enough to accommodate these teeth, they can become impacted - unable to come in or move into their proper place. They may grow sideways, emerge only part way from the gum, or remain trapped beneath the gum and bone.

Impaction occurs most often in the third molars of the lower jaw. After examining your mouth and X-rays, your dentist will discuss whether your wisdom teeth should be removed, and make a referral to our Oral Surgeon for the procedure.

Removal of wisdom tooth can protect the overall health of the mouth.

Raffles Dental is Medisave Accredited, and part of the charges for minor oral surgeries like these may be paid for using your CPF Medisave account.

Before surgery, your oral surgeon will explain what to expect, have you sign a consent form and give you personalized instructions to follow.
Keep in mind these general items to help your surgery go smoothly.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and arrange to have someone be with you after surgery. Extractions can be performed under local or general anesthesia. Following surgery, you may experience some swelling and mild discomfort, which is part of the normal healing process. Cold compresses can help decrease the swelling and medication prescribed by your dentist can help decrease the pain. You may be instructed to drink only clear liquids following surgery and later progress to soft foods.

Some patients experience numbness or tingling following surgery. Normal sensation usually returns in a period of time.

Talk to us about any questions that you have. It is especially important to let our dentist know, before surgery, of any illness that you have and medications that you are taking.

Dental Implants
Dental Implants are a popular and effective way to replace missing teeth. Besides having excellent esthetic function, a dental implant looks and feels just like your natural tooth. More importantly, you can be relieved from the embarrassment, periodontal pain, discomfort, and bad breath that are related to wearing dentures.

Depending on the care, implants can be used for as long as 10 – 30 years.

Dental Implants at Raffles Hospital are all performed by qualified Oral Surgeons.

Do call us for a complimentary first-time dental implant consult with our Oral Surgeon if you are interested. While the consult is complimentary, we would require a full mouth X-ray and /or diagnostic casts for treatment planning for all first-time patients.

Periodontics
Depending on our oral health, sometimes we may require more complex gum treatment by a gum specialist (Periodontist).

Root planning involves smoothing the root surfaces of your teeth with thin curettes so gum tissue can more firmly reattach to roots that are clean and smooth to prevent tooth loss and sensitivity problems. Unlike normal scaling, this procedure goes deeper down the gum line and your gums

Headache Treatment

What is Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD)?
Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD) is a collective term embracing a group of dental and medical conditions that involve the jaw joints (ie Temporomandibular Joint), chewing muscles and associated structures. It is a major cause of non-dental facial pain and a growing healthcare challenge. Many people have the signs and symptoms of TMD but may not have been diagnosed.

What is the TMJ?
The Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your lower jaw (mandible) to your skull and is situated on either side of your head in front of the ears.

It is one of the most frequently used joints in your body and probably the most complex. Being a flexible hinge joint, it can move side to side as well as up and down allowing you to chew, talk and yawn.

Its movement and position are controlled by muscles and ligaments attached to and surrounding it.

Sign and Symptons of TMD

  • Headaches
  • Ear pain, blocked feeling, ringing sounds, partial hearing loss, dizziness
  • Jaw pain - painful TMJ or chewing muscles located in temples, cheeks etc
  • Jaw joint sounds - clicking, popping, grating sounds
  • Jaw function difficulty - problems chewing, yawning, talking etc
  • Abnormal jaw opening - limitation, asymmetrical movement, catching, locking
  • Bite problems
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • TMD related pain, dysfunction and disability can significantly affect your quality of life.

What causes TMD?
Although there are specific reasons (eg trauma, degenerative arthritis) for some TMD, as a group they have no common cause and are usually the result of multiple contributing factors.

These include:

  • Bruxism - unconscious grinding and clenching of the jaws during sleep or when awake
  • Trauma / injury - blows to face and/or jaws, biting on extremely hard food or an unexpected hard particle, extremely wide jaw opening etc
  • Habits - regular gum chewing, eating only on one side
Poor bite and jaw relationships - poorly aligned teeth, skeletal problems etc
  • Medical conditions - systemic arthritis, certain neurological conditions etc
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Psychological conditions - depression, somatisation etc

How is TMD treated?
Treatment largely depends on the kind of TMD that you are suffering from. Comprehensive history taking, physical examination and mental wellness screening (where applicable) is essential for complete diagnosis.

Routine or special TMJ x-ray techniques like MRI and CT scans are sometimes needed for diagnosing your TMJ condition.

Treatment goals are to decrease pain, decrease adverse loading to jaw joints and muscles, restore function, restore normal daily activities and improve your quality of life.

Treatment usually starts with conservative therapies which do not invade the tissues of the face, jaw or joints and includes:

  • Education and self-care
  • Behaviour modification of harmful habits
  • Psychotherapy including stress management and relaxation techniques
  • Medications
  • Physical therapy (eg TENS, ultrasound etc)

Dental splint therapy
If your disorder is very long standing and associated with major structural changes and/or prominent psychological distress and disability, jaw surgery, bite (occlusal) therapy, orthodontics and medical specialist referrals may be warranted.

TCM Specialist Services
Raffles Chinese Medicine also organises TCM specialty clinics to meet the specific needs of patients.

Cardiovascular Health
TCM seeks to maintain blood pressure within normal range by improving the body's self-balance function and regulation of the whole body. This helps reduce the complications of hypertension and promote an overall well being for better health.

Diabetes
TCM treatment for pre-diabetics, and for moderate or more severe conditions as a complement to Western medicine. An integrated treatment can lead to better control of the disease and reduce diabetic complications in the long run.

Eye
Using auricular acupressure and other modalities, TCM stimulates blood circulation, enhance nutritional balance and organ functions to improve eye conditions such as myopia, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and post-operation glaucoma.

Fertility
TCM regulates the body's system to aid in blood flow to the reproductive organs and to stabilise hormonal levels. This in turn increases ovarian function in women as well as sperm production in men.

Men’s Health
Improves organ function to treat erectile dysfunction, impotence and prostatitis.

Spinal Problems / Pain Management
TCM offers pain relief by removing blockages in the meridians and through improving circulation to strengthen core muscle groups.

Stroke
Treatment for post-stroke rehabilitation to improve motor and cognitive skills, and boost the body's vitality in responding to conventional treatment.

Skin & Body Care
Uses non-surgical methods of acupuncture, Tui Na massage and herbal medicine to

  • Enhance muscular tone to reduce eye bags, sagging cheeks, drooping eyelids, double chins and stretch marks and achieve general face and body firming
  • Reduce wrinkles on the upper and lower lip, frown lines and forehead
  • Alleviate pigmentation problems
  • Achieve local and full-body slimming
  • Provide deep muscle relaxation
