History of the clinic
EmCell history is remarkable for invention of fetal stem cell isolation methods and pioneering in their practical application.
- 1987 treatment of cytostatic myelodepression and aplastic anemia (filing of patent application)
- 1991 clinical trials and invention of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-infection treatment method; filing of patent application in the USA (priority dates back to 1993).
- 1992 successful application of fetal stem cells (in vivo) for treatment of type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus and filing of patent application
1993-1994 foundation of the Cell Therapy Clinic of the National Medical University (Kiev, Ukraine). Clinical trials of cell transplants for treatment of different diseases and conditions. First Ukrainian patents were granted. First efforts in development of multiple sclerosis treatment methods.

- 2008 development of methods of fetal cell suspensions application in surgical practice, in particular for treatment of erosive-ulcerative lesions of stomach and duodenum complicated by bleeding. Elaboration of patient surveillance that was declared the best at the 1-st Central European Congress on Surgery (Prague, Czech Republic).

EmCell clinic owns modern cell suspension bank equipped with the high-technology equipment: modern Dewar flasks and large cryogenic banks (tanks) containing tens of thousands of fetal cell suspensions.
Patents
Patenting has always been regarded as one of EmCell priorities. We were the first in the world to describe post-transplantation period after fetal stem cell treatment of such diseases as AIDS, HIV-infection, type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus, aplastic anemia, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, degenerative diseases of nervous system, inflammatory and cancer bowel diseases, etc. In 1993, International Patent Application Examination Board in the Hague awarded them level "A", or absolutely pioneer works.
In our patents we mentioned the possibility of treatment of the large number of diseases and conditions caused by or resulting in cell count reduction. Most of all, we take pride in our US and Dutch patents.
We were the first in the world to offer fetal stem cell-based medicinal preparations and mentioned this in our US, Dutch, Russian and Ukrainian patents. We believe that sales of fetal stem cell-based medicinal preparations in specialized pharmacies for domiciliary or hospital treatment will become possible in this century.
This will create the grounds for the development of the new ideology of practical medicine when medical professional will issue prescription for cell composite consisting of HLA-free stem cells. It is they that will help to cope with illness- or age-related cell deficiency.

Scientific activities
We work in the field of the modern branch of science called cell therapy. And we gave our definition of this branch of science. Cell therapy is science about stem cells and their clinical use.
It was in the 1990’s that we realized that this was the science of the method. If disease or condition is caused by or results in cell count reduction, cell therapy can be applied.
Almost all severe acquired and genetic diseases cause destruction of actively functioning cells. Stem cells capable of proliferation (multiplication), differentiation (specialization) and morphogenesis (tissue formation) are effective for tissue and organ function and cell count restoration. Stem cells of fetal origin are the most effective in achieving of the above-mentioned effects as they have the highest proliferative potential.
Since 1991, 7 MMS theses were written by post-graduate students and staff of the Therapy Chair of the National Medical University of Ukraine for whom Prof. A.I. Smikodub was a scientific advisor.
The scope of our scientific interests was wide: it included clinical trials and development of treatment methods for type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus, AIDS, HIV-infection, leukosis, aplastic anemia, primary and secondary thrombocytopenia, cytostatic myelodepression, cancer diseases, degenerative diseases of central nervous system, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, muscular dystrophies, such conditions as climax, infertility, aging, as well as functional disturbances of internal organs, chronic fatigue syndrome, application of fetal stem cells in surgical practice, etc.
We regularly attend international and national scientific events where we present our posters, reports and lectures. So far, our professionals took part in a number of international and national conferences and congresses.

Safety Issues
We are concerned about the safety of the suspensions we use and want our patients feel safe about the treatments offered. We guarantee the safety, the system of screening has been developed, that includes the following:
Donor is screened for viruses prior to the procedure.
When collected, stem cells are screened for viruses by our laboratory. Defective and non-viable cells are discarded at once.
After this, suspensions are taken to the certified state laboratory that performs final screening and issues safety certificates for each suspension.
Very often people are worried about cancer issues. Unlike embryonic stem cells of early development stage (1-2 weeks old, in vitro) characterized by uncontrolled growth and capable of causing teratomas and other complications, stem cells we use have already passed the first stage of specialization, lost the capacity for uncontrolled growth and "know" what cells or tissues to differentiate into. This means that there is no risk of cancer. In 17 years, there were no post-treatment cancer cases reported by any patient.

Treatments & Prices
EmCell Clinic offers fetal stem cell treatment programs developed by its founder Doctor A. Smikodub and his colleagues. Treatment envisages administration of suspensions containing fetal stem cells responsible for formation of different tissues and organs.
Our fetal stem cell suspensions make the core of our treatment. All the cells undergo triple screening for safety confirmed by the independent state laboratory certificate.
Cell suspensions are prepared in our own laboratory and stored in our own cell bank, which is the most reliable and safest way of working. Treatment procedures fully meet ethical and scientific standards.

The Effects of Stem Cell Treatment
Curative effects of fetal stem cell treatment exceed those achieved by any other modern technology. They encompass all levels of functioning of human body. Among them are:

Treatment
Treatment at EmCell clinic is a complex therapy combining fetal stem cell treatment and conventional therapy. These methods are the latest achievements in modern medicine.
Fetal stem cell treatment presupposes transplantation of progenitor cells capable to form pools of cells responsible for certain systems and functions of the body: nervous, immune, and muscular systems, hematopoiesis, blood circulation, etc. Fetal stem cell transplantation is minimally invasive procedure presupposing minor intervention into the patient’s body, as it is conducted intravenously drip-feed or subcutaneously.
For our treatment, we use different types of stem cells harvested from various germ layers of the legally aborted embryos of 5–8 weeks of gestation, as these cells are characterized by specific therapeutic effects. Significant results in treatment have been achieved due to combination of different types of stem cells considering the disease process.
Curative Effects of Fetal Stem Cell Treatment
After administration into the patient’s body, fetal stem cells migrate to the site of damage, engraft, multiplicate, undergo specialization regulated by the new host (recipient), substitute lost or damaged cells, and restore the cell mass and impaired body functions. Duchenne muscular dystrophy: patient M.
Patient M., born in 1979, has a long history of muscular dystrophy. He underwent three courses of stem cell treatment in EmCell Clinic, and this treatment was very effective.

Prof. Alexander I. Smikodub attended European Congress on Anti-Aging and Aesthetic Medicine held in Dusseldorf, Germany on September 11-14, 2008 as invited speaker and presented report Embryonic Stem Cells in vivo in Anti-Aging Treatment.
After European Congress on Anti-Aging and Aesthetic Medicine, Prof. Alexander I. Smikodub attended closed seminar Stem Cell Frontiers 2008 organized by Millard Foundation in Chateau Joncmesnil, Belgium and held on September 14-16, 2008. This seminar was dedicated to the new advances in regenerative medicine, and Prof. Smikodub lectured on Clinical Application of Embryonic Stem Cells.

Under observation were 78 DMD patients aged 3-18. Diagnosis was confirmed by the genetic analysis. Patients were administered mesenchymal, ectodermal, and endodermal stem cells isolated from germ layers of 4-8 weeks old cadaverous embryos’ systems and organs; amounts administered - 0,5-3 ml, cell count- 0,1-100x105/ml. In the course of the first two months after the treatment, strength of different muscle groups increased by 100-700% and was maintained for 8-15 months. Besides, reported was also ROM increase, within the limits of the patient’s stage: stage II patients reported improved gait quality, ability to step on the heel and walk the stairs, raise from the floor with more confidence, and endure bigger loads during the day. Observed were also decreased pseudohypertrophy and strain of forearms and calves, contractures of knee and ankle joints, subsidence of myocardiopathy manifestations and respiratory insufficiency, especially in stage IVa-IVb patients. DMD patients require continuous treatment (at least, once every 6-8 months) aimed at aversion of muscular atrophy progression. Termination of the treatment results in further progression of the disease and limitation of physical activity. Transplantation of embryonic stem cells terminates DMD progression, notwithstanding the stage of the process, and results in marked improvements.
