Skin Resurfacing: Know Your Options
Overview
Skin resurfacing is considered a type of facial plastic surgery designed to reduce the appearance of sun damaged facial skin, wrinkles, vertical lines found around the mouth, eyes and nose as well as reduce the appearance of brown "age" spots, reduce scarring from acne or chickenpox and to reduce the appearance of facial scars caused by injuries. Skin resurfacing is a fairly minimal and superficial skin treatment they can be performed on individuals of any age, and maybe customized to independent needs and desires.

Popular Skin Resurfacing Techniques
These days, the most popular skin resurfacing techniques include:

  • Laser Skin Resurfacing
  • Dermabrasion
  • Chemical Peels

Each of these techniques utilizes a different method of achieving the same result, which is healthier looking skin. However, each of these techniques also offers a different approach and methodology to skin removal that creates fresh layers of skin that effectively reduces the signs of aging, scarring, acne and other blemishes.

A chemical peel is a solution that may be applied to specific sections of the face or to the entire facial structure. In many cases, individuals undergo chemical peels around the eyes to address crow's feet, or around the mouth to reduce the appearance of vertical wrinkles from the nose to the corner of the mouth. A chemical solution is applied, depending on the size of the area to be treated, with a sponge, cotton swabs, or even a Q-tip size cotton swab. The chemical peel is allowed to sit on the face for a certain amount of time, after which it is neutralized with another solution.

Chemical peels come in different strengths and peeling actions, which are determined between patient and doctor depending on desired results. Chemical peels may utilize glycolic acid, trichloracetic acid, or phenol, depending on the depth of tissue damage being treated.

Dermabrasion is performed through the use of a small wheel with a surface similar to sandpaper. This reference surface removes the upper layer of skin and is most commonly used on facial scars such as acne. Dermabrasion is also a popular technique for reducing the appearance of wrinkles around the mouth.

Laser resurfacing is achieved through the use of a carbon dioxide laser that uses a technique that literally vaporizes superficial skin layers. The depth of the laser beam as well as energy transmitted by the beam is controlled. Laser resurfacing is extremely effective in reducing the appearance of age spots, acne scars, and wrinkles. Some candidates are not ideal for laser resurfacing based on skin texture and thickness.

How Much Does Skin Resurfacing Cost?
Cost of skin resurfacing is determined by the technique as well as the location and number of areas to be treated. In addition, some skin resurfacing treatments need more than one application. In the United States,  average cost of laser skin resurfacing techniques is roughly $2,400-$3,000, while chemical peels and dermabrasion may range between $600 and $900. Dermabrasion costs roughly $1,350. Most medical and health insurance companies in the United States do not cover elective plastic surgical procedures. However, medical travelers may enjoy the benefits of an exotic vacation and a skin resurfacing treatment at a very attractive discount in a between 30% and 60% India, Mexico, or locations in South America such as Argentina or Brazil.

Who Performs Skin Resurfacing Procedures?
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery recommends that anyone seeking cosmetic surgery take the time to research various procedures, understand the process, and search out highly qualified and certified physicians to perform their procedures. A cosmetic or plastic surgeon should have at least five years of surgical training and at least two years of training and experience in plastic surgical procedures.

The Joint Commission International accredits many international facilities. A doctor, no matter where they live, should operate only in accredited medical facilities and fulfill quality standards in medical education requirements. Cosmetic and plastic surgeons from around the world should be board certified by medically accredited boards, associations, or organizations in their country of origin.
