Overview
More commonly known as a tummy tuck, abdominoplasty is one of the most popular types of cosmetic or plastic surgery. Abdominoplasty provides a flatter abdomen and abdominal appearance through the removal of excess fat and skin from areas where excess fat causes abdominal bulging. Abdominoplasty is generally performed through an incision in an area between the naval and the pubic hairline, and excess fat and tissues are removed through liposuction.

Benefits of Abdominoplasty
Abdominoplasty reduces loose or sagging abdomens caused by genetics, major fluctuations in weight such as those experienced during pregnancy, the aging process and post-pregnancy stretching. The tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat and may help to restore the appearance of a smoother and flatter tummy.

Abdominoplasty Procedure
Several approaches or techniques to abdominoplasty are used today, including:

  • Traditional abdominoplasty
  • Mini tummy tuck
  • Circumferential abdominoplasty
  • Extended abdominoplasty

The traditional abdominoplasty or tummy tuck procedure is commonly performed today. A horizontal incision is made between the hipbones. Your surgeon may also make several smaller incisions around the belly button area. This technique is commonly performed in conjunction with liposuction.

A partial abdominoplasty is called a mini tummy tuck. This approach is suggested for those close to their goal body weight. A small incision beneath the belly button facilitates removal of excess padding or fat through liposuction.

The circumferential approach is common in those who have undergone gastric bypass surgery. This technique deals with sagging skin in the abdominal area, and the hips, thighs and buttocks. As a more drastic technique, this approach will cause some scarring.

An extended abdominoplasty approach is common in those wanting to get rid of their "love handles". This technique involves the removal of fat and excess skin from the stomach and the sides of the waist.

Your cosmetic surgeon will assess and discuss with you your condition and general overall health and then make recommendations to which method or procedure is best suited to individualized cases.  The number and length of incisions will depend on the type of procedure that is chosen.

How Much Does Abdominoplasty Cost?
In the United States, an abdominoplasty procedure may range between $3,000 and $10,000, depending on the approach used. Surgical costs may or may not include anesthetics, consultations, and surgeon's fees, so always ask. Fees in Argentina are typically 50% less than those in the United States, while procedures performed in India average $2,000, and in Turkey cost around $5,000. Most health insurance carriers in the U.S. do not considered abdominoplasty a necessary procedure, but a cosmetic procedure, and do not cover costs.

Who Performs Abdominoplasty?
Choosing a qualified plastic surgeon is of vital importance. The surgeon you choose should be a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or a Society of Plastic Surgeons in the country of origin. In addition, the American Board of Plastic Surgery should also certify a plastic cosmetic or reconstructive surgeon or by a board or organization in the surgeon's country of origin or practice. Surgeries should be performed in an accredited facility.
