An auditory brainstem implant or ABI is a surgically implanted device that is effective in providing a sensation of sound to a person suffering from severe hearing loss. This is a surgical procedure of the brain and results may widely vary from person to person. Several patients have achieved improvement in being alert to sound awareness along with improved lip-reading ability. Many patients have been able to recognize the sound, word, and even sentence after this surgery.
