Rebecca's Gastric Sleeve Surgery Journey in Tijuana

Deciding to undergo bariatric surgery is rarely a snap decision — it is the result of careful research, honest self-reflection, and the search for a team you can truly trust. In this featured testimonial, Rebecca, a 32-year-old mother of three from Newfoundland, Canada, shares her candid experience with Gastric Sleeve Surgery in Tijuana at Hospital CYNTAR and its Obesity Control Center (OCC), the hospital’s dedicated bariatric center of excellence. From the challenge of the pre-op liquid diet to the warmth of the recovery experience, Rebecca offers an unfiltered look at what it’s really like to travel internationally for weight loss surgery.

Zero Regrets: The Power of Doing Your Research

Rebecca opens her testimonial with a message she now shares with everyone who reaches out to her: she has zero regrets [00:00]. Before committing to her procedure, she did extensive research into where she would have her surgery — and she is confident she chose the best possible place. For anyone weighing the decision, her experience underscores how much peace of mind comes from choosing an accredited, internationally recognized facility.

That confidence is precisely what Hospital CYNTAR, a JCI-accredited multispecialty hospital whose bariatric program is an internationally accredited center of excellence, is built to provide. Patients arrive having done their homework, and the institution’s track record is designed to meet that scrutiny.

From Newfoundland to Tijuana: A Trusted Recommendation

Rebecca, 32, traveled all the way from Newfoundland, Canada, after learning about the Obesity Control Center from a friend who had undergone surgery there almost two years earlier [00:20]. Her friend simply "didn’t have enough good to say about it," and that word-of-mouth trust made Rebecca feel comfortable taking the leap.

To stay accountable and preserve her memories, Rebecca has been documenting her entire journey on TikTok [00:37] — a growing trend among bariatric patients who want to look back on how far they’ve come and help others considering the same path.

The Hardest Part: The Pre-Op Liquid Diet

Rebecca is refreshingly honest about the most difficult stage of the process: the pre-operative liquid diet [00:46]. As a mother of three young children, cooking meals for her family while not being able to eat them herself was a real challenge at first — though, as she puts it, you get used to it.

The pre-op diet is a critical step in bariatric surgery, shrinking the liver and reducing surgical risk. Remarkably, Rebecca notes that just a couple of days after surgery she simply isn’t hungry [00:54] — a direct result of how the gastric sleeve reduces the production of the hunger hormone, ghrelin.

First Impressions: A Smooth, Organized Arrival

For international patients, logistics are often the biggest source of anxiety. Rebecca says the experience blew her expectations out of the water [01:10]. She describes the facility as spotlessly clean and the staff as friendly and organized — from the moment she landed in San Diego, to being picked up, to arriving at the hospital, everything was seamless.

That San Diego-to-Tijuana coordination is one of Hospital CYNTAR’s biggest advantages for North American patients: world-class surgical care just minutes across the border, with the travel handled for you.

An Honest Take on Recovery

What makes Rebecca’s testimonial so valuable is her honesty. She wants future patients to know that bariatric surgery is not "the easy way out" that some assume [01:41]. It is difficult — but, in her words, it’s worth it. She is doing it specifically for her health, to keep up with her kids, and to build a healthier mindset around food.

She is candid about the realities of the first 24 hours: there can be gas pain, and the anesthesia can be rough [01:57]. By sharing the "nitty-gritty" rather than only the highlights, Rebecca gives prospective patients a realistic, trustworthy picture of what to expect.

Community, Support, and Meeting Dr. Ortiz

Rebecca describes every doctor, nurse, and staff member she encountered as phenomenal [02:06]. She especially appreciated Dr. Ariel Ortiz, who she found genuinely funny and personable, joking with patients and checking in on everyone individually [02:13]. Getting to know the team on a personal level, she says, made the whole experience feel like a community and a family.

That sense of belonging extends well beyond the hospital walls. Rebecca highlights how supportive the wider bariatric community has been — from patients who had surgery five years ago to those who had surgery just yesterday, all reaching out to encourage one another [01:25]. She plans to keep documenting her journey on TikTok at @becca_gets_vsg [02:34] so others can follow the behind-the-scenes reality of life after surgery.

[00:00] Anyone who reaches out to me, I've already said like this is the best experience, and I did a lot of research before I, you know, committed to coming, and I have zero regrets. I think I chose the best place and I would recommend anyone to come to the OCC.
[00:20] My name is Rebecca. I'm from Newfoundland, Canada, and I'm 32 years old. I found out about the OCC from a friend who had surgery almost two years ago here and just didn't have enough good to say about it. So she made me feel really comfortable.
[00:33] Yeah, I have been documenting my journey on my TikTok just for myself, to be able to have the memories to kind of look back on and see like where I started and what I came through.
[00:46] The pre-op diet and the liquid diet I found really difficult. Especially because I have a family — I have three young kids and my husband — so, you know, cooking meals for them and not being able to have that was hard at first, but you get used to it.
[01:03] And then now since surgery, I mean, I'm not hungry, honestly. It's only been a couple of days, but yeah, it's been a great experience.
[01:10] It blew my expectations out of the water. It was amazing. It's so clean. Everyone is so friendly, so organized — right from when you land in San Diego, to picking you up, getting you here. Everything was just so smooth.
[01:25] The bariatric community in general has just been so supportive, from people who've had surgery five years ago to people who've had surgery yesterday, reaching out to me saying, you know, we're kind of in the same place, how are you doing?
[01:33] So I definitely plan on continuing documenting my journey as long as I can. And I want to encourage people, you know, that this isn't considered the easy way out like people think. It is difficult, but it's worth it.
[01:49] And I'm doing it specifically for my health, to be able to keep up with my kids and just to have a healthy mindset with food and stuff. So yeah, I plan on continuing to document post-op and all the nitty-gritty, 'cause there is gas pain.
[01:57] The anesthesia can be kind of rough. After the first 24 hours was a little bit tough, but it's worth it.
[02:06] Oh, the doctors, nurses, every person that I've come in contact with since I've been here has been phenomenal. So amazing.
[02:13] Dr. Ortiz is hilarious. He likes to joke, it's really funny. But yeah, just knowing them on a personal level, coming into the room and checking in on how everyone's doing — it just feels like a community and a family. And that's what I really loved about the OCC.
[02:34] Sure, you can follow me on TikTok. I'm documenting my journey. It's becca_gets_vsg.
[02:39] So that's where you can see all the behind-the-scenes of what I've been going through.
