Global competition in healthcare industry is providing increasing opportunities for patients to travel abroad for medical treatment. Foreigners visiting the country for medical treatment purposes have increased tremendously since 2003; hitting a total of 341,288 in 2007. A revenue worth of about RM222.25mil was generated from medical tourism for the first nine months of 2008 from over 282,000 foreigners. This shows an increase of 16% compared to the year 2007.
