Basic Orthodontics Overview
In the past, orthodontic procedures seemed to consist mostly of braces for teenagers to fix poorly aligned teeth or jaw structure. Now, more adults are getting orthodontic procedures done not only to fix problems with alignment and bite, but also to make the mouth look more esthetically pleasing.

In some cases, getting an orthodontic procedure can not only make the teeth look more attractive, but as a way to alleviate pain when eating or that interferes with speaking. Orthodontics can positively affect a person at any age, and can prevent further complications or damage caused by incorrectly growing teeth, jaw structure as well as conditions caused by illness or accidents.

Finally, not only do straight teeth look and feel better, they are also easier to clean and maintain, maintain dental health.

Popular Orthodontics Procedures

  • Traditional braces
  • Invisalign

Orthodontic Braces - One of the more traditional orthodontic procedures, past and present, braces are used to align teeth. Unlike braces of the past however, orthodontists today use several different styles for patients including a clear plastic and tooth-colored ceramic style brace. These different styles allow an orthodontist to re-align the teeth without the braces being very noticeable. However, the most economical choice is still traditional braces, made of metal.Braces re-align the teeth with the help of brackets bonded to each tooth, and an arch wire that guides each tooth into the proper location over a period of time.

Invisalign -A relatively new idea in orthodontics, Invisalign is a clear plastic mold that aligns the teeth without the use of braces. After obtaining impressions of the mouth, the orthodontist will use a computer to create clear retainers that will progressively align the teeth. The first retainer fits the teeth in the beginning of the treatment, and the following retainers will work to move them into alignment with gentle pressure. While each individual may use a different number of retainers until they achieve the result they want, it generally takes between 18 and 30 retainers to complete treatment. Each retainer is worn for two weeks before the next one is used.

Benefits
Utilizing the benefits of modern braces, no matter what the style, improves the alignment of the teeth in a quick amount of time, and with less discomfort than they used to generate. These dental treatments may also help to re-align any jaw formations that affect biting or speaking.

Invisalign allows patients to align teeth without the look of traditional braces. This treatment also allows for increased dental hygiene, since patients can carry on with brushing and flossing just as they would without any orthodontic appliances, which reduces the chances of staining or decay often associated with the traditional braces.

Cost
Orthodontic braces vary in price, depending on the style and length of procedure. Generally they can be priced anywhere from $1,700 to $5,600. Invisalign is much more expensive (costing up to a whopping $9,000 in the U.S.), but also can depend on the length of treatment and the number of retainers needed to get a final result. Costs are usually 20-50% more than braces, and the location of the orthodontist can also affect the price.

The cost of traditional braces in Mexico is roughly 70% less than the cost in the U.S., and in India, ranges around $1,000 while in Thailand, the cost is roughly $1,500. Invisalign costs in Thailand are around about $5,000, quite a savings over what is estimated in the U.S.

Choosing an Orthodontist
Locating a qualified orthodontist is very important. Very often, a primary general dentist can give a referral to an orthodontist, but more locations are offering similar treatments with non-specialists. Some things to keep in mind when looking for an orthodontist include:

  • Check the referral given by the dentist. Many dentists work with orthodontists, and constantly see the quality of results of the completed work.
  • Make sure the orthodontist is a licensed member of the American Association of Orthodontists or Association or Organization in the country of origin, and that they have completed all required coursework in school.
  • Ask to see before and after pictures, as well as any special techniques that they may use in the procedure.
