Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin tooth-colored shells created to improve the teeth’s front surface and conceal its impurities. These wafer-thin shells are attached to the front of the teeth in turn changing their size, shape, color and length.
Porcelain vs. Composite Resin Veneers
Most dental veneers are made from porcelain and composite resin materials.
Porcelain Veneers - repel stains and mimic light reflecting properties of our teeth better compared to resin ones. They are designed in a dental laboratory and can last for 12-25 years. They cost more and are more durable than composite ones.
Composite Resin Veneers - are slimmer and require removal of the tooth surface before placement. They can be easily created during your dental visit. They cost less and require maintenance because they chip.
Dental Veneers Procedure:
The placement of dental veneers may be completed in two dental visits in six weeks.
After assessment and some diagnostics, your dentist will help you choose the best teeth color for your veneers from a special shade chart. Then, your dentist will create a customized treatment plan basing from the examinations he did.
In placing the veneer, the dentist first administers a local anesthetic to minimize pain. Next, he prepares your teeth by reshaping it using a bur. If you opt for composite resin veneers, the dentist will apply, shape and let it harden using high intensity light. Additional composite maybe needed to correct its form and appearance. When it is all in place, it will be polished using a bur.
If you opt for porcelain veneers, the dentist will create an impression of your teeth through a mold. Next, it will be sent to a dental laboratory to be professionally fabricated. Dentists who have CAD/CAM technology may design the veneers you need in one visit. Using CAD/CAM technology, your veneer restorations will be created, bonded and adjusted onto your teeth in one dental visit. This type of treatment is also called "same day dentistry."
