Puhua has successfully removed two brain tumors for a 93 years old patient

A 93-year-old patient has removed two meningeoma successfully at Beijing Puhua International Hospital. This is the most senior brain tumor patient Puhua has operated. Now the patient has gone back to home happily with his family.

  1. Sudden Blindness

Mr. Luan is a journalist and writer. Writing and reading are the most important parts of his life. Unfortunately, one year ago, Mr. Luan’s left eye suddenly went blind, and his right vision was also decreasing rapidly. Brain MRI at local hospital showed two meningeoma, located in cerebgral falx and saddle area. Even though meningeoma is a benign tumor, the tumor has caused severe compression to the optic nerve. Therefore, tumor resection is necessary. However, the surgical risk is extremely high considering his age, in addition he has 15 years hypertension. So the suggestion from local hospital was conservative treatment.

After a while of ‘conservative treatment’, there was no improvement. The Chinese Spring Festival was coming, Mr. Luan’s right eye was almost blind. He couldn’t do anything and he lost the hope to life. His family came to Beijing Puhua International Hospital for the last hope.

  1. Neurosurgery team at BPIH fight for Mr. Luan to regain his vision

After multidisciplinary consultation, even though with the concerns and high risk, Puhua’s neurosurgery team decided to fight for Mr. Luan to regain his eyesight.

Brain tumor surgery in such senior patient is very risky. First of all, their brain tissue is relatively fragile, easy to bleeding and hard to stop bleeding. It brings great challenge to the medical team., Moreover, another challenge  is anesthesia. This is because the body is relatively weak and organs are degenerated, so the sensitivity to abnormal condition decreased. Senior body’s poor metabolic capability can also lead to anesthesia excessiveness, which may cause irreversible damage. Moreover, senior patient intend to have more historical diseases. All of these make the anesthesia highly risky.

Anesthesiologists, who are rarely seen in public, have been hailed as the “hidden heroes” of surgery. However, a successful operation requires not only the superb skills of the surgeon to remove the lesion, but also an excellent anesthesiologist to monitor patient’s vital signs. The situation of patients during the operation is changing rapidly. An excellent anesthesiologist should predict the danger in advance, quickly, calmly and accurately deal with all kinds of emergencies, which requires both experienceand expertise.

MRI before and after the surgery, we can see the tumor is completely removed after the surgery.

Yingping Zhang is the director of anesthesiology department in BPIH. With decades of clinical experience, she has been appointed to escort surgeons in times of crisis and has completed thousands of difficult surgeries together. With the support of director Zhang, and vice president Dr. Xiaodi Han, gathered a trustworthy neurosurgery team.

After intensive arrangements, the surgical team develop a sophisticated plan to deal with variety of circumstances that might happen during the operation. After more than six hours of fighting, two tumors were removed at one time, and the optic nerve, which had been “bent” by the tumor, was successfully rescued. The operation was very successful.

  1. Vision recovery

Postoperative complications of senior patients are also one of the difficulties. Postoperative pneumonia, deep venous thrombosis, cerebral infarction, postoperative intracranial hematoma and other serious complications are easy to occur among senior brain tumor patients. Their nursing and monitoring are also a great challenge for the medical team.

Two days after the operation, Mu. Luan is sleeping most of the time, the vital signs are normal.

Four days after the operation, he started to have light perception.

Ten days after the operation, Mr. Luan can already see the flickering light and shadow of holly in the ward through the window.

Fifteen days after the operation, he can see the shadow of his daughter.

Twenty-one days after the operation, he can recognize the different faces of the nurses wearing masks who take care of him every day,.

27 days after the operation, his overall condition improved a lot, and was discharged from the hospital..

Mr. Luan’s right eye recovery is great and even the left eye that has already blind for over a year started to have light perception. This is a surprising result for Mr. Luan and his family.
