The Journey from Maryland to Mexico
Deandra Gilbert, a gastric sleeve patient from Maryland, began her journey at Hospital CYNTAR’s Obesity Control Center in 2017 [00:15]. Like many patients, she sought out a long-term solution for weight management that went beyond traditional dieting. Having heard about the center from a trusted friend who had undergone the procedure seven years prior, Deandra felt confident in the reputation of the program.
Word-of-mouth recommendations are a cornerstone of medical tourism success. When a friend achieves significant results and maintains their health over nearly a decade, it provides a level of social proof that no advertisement can match. Deandra conducted her own research and found that the high standards of care at Hospital CYNTAR aligned perfectly with her health goals.
Her first surgery in 2017 was a success, leading to significant weight loss and improved vitality. However, the path to permanent weight loss is a lifelong commitment, and sometimes adjustments are necessary to ensure the best possible long-term outcomes.
Understanding Gastric Sleeve Revision Surgery
In 2020, Deandra returned to Mexico, but this time she wasn't just there for a check-up. She accompanied a friend who was nervous about having their own surgery and discovered that she was a candidate for a gastric sleeve revision [00:54]. Revision surgery is often sought when the initial results of a weight loss procedure begin to plateau or when slight weight regain occurs.
Many patients are unaware that "re-sleeving" or revising a previous bariatric procedure is even an option. At Hospital CYNTAR’s Obesity Control Center, surgeons specialize in these complex cases. They analyze why the first procedure may have lost some of its efficacy and apply modern techniques to restore the restriction and hormonal benefits of the gastric sleeve.
Deandra noted that her second experience was just as seamless as the first. She experienced no pain and felt fully supported by the staff throughout the process. This highlights the importance of choosing a facility that views bariatric care as a lifelong relationship rather than a one-time transaction.
The Role of Support in Successful Revisions
Bariatric surgery is as much about the psychological transition as the physical one. By returning to the center with a friend, Deandra illustrated the power of the "OCC Family" concept. Having a support system—someone who has walked the path before—can drastically reduce the anxiety associated with surgery in a foreign country.
Comparing USA vs. Mexico Healthcare Systems
One of the most compelling parts of Deandra’s story is her critique of the bariatric surgery process in the United States. She described the US process as "complicated" and "drawn out" [01:58]. In the US, insurance requirements and hospital bureaucracy often force patients to wait a year or more for surgery.
For Deandra, time was a luxury she didn't have. At the time of her initial search, her health was in serious jeopardy. Doctors had warned her of the immediate risks of heart attack or stroke [02:14]. Waiting a year for a "scheduled" surgery in Maryland could have been fatal.
Medical tourism in Mexico offers an alternative that bypasses these long waiting lists. Patients are able to receive life-saving surgery in weeks rather than months, without compromising on medical excellence. Deandra emphasized that the shorter timeframe combined with the high level of care made Mexico the much better option for her specific health needs.
The Expertise of Dr. Ortiz and Dr. Alma
The human element is a major factor in Deandra's praise for Hospital CYNTAR. She fondly remembers the bedside manner of Dr. Ariel Ortiz, who is known globally for his expertise in bariatric surgery. She noted how he made rounds, giving patients hugs and checking in on their well-being personally [01:29].
Furthermore, the educational aspect of the center sets it apart. Deandra mentioned Dr. Alma's post-operative presentations, which focus on what to expect during recovery and how to maintain health long-term [03:06]. This comprehensive approach ensures that patients aren't just operated on, but are also educated on how to succeed in their "new life."
A Focus on Safety and Sterilization
Safety is a common concern for those traveling abroad for surgery. However, Deandra pointed out that the facility's strict protocols, including detailed emails and health checks prior to arrival, made her feel completely secure. As a JCI-accredited hospital, Hospital CYNTAR’s commitment to international standards of excellence rivals—and in many cases exceeds—that of hospitals in the United States.
World-Class Bariatric Facilities in Tijuana
The physical environment of the clinic played a significant role in Deandra's comfort. Having visited both the older and the new facilities, she was highly impressed by the "state-of-the-art" technology and modern aesthetic [02:55]. The use of advanced medical equipment ensures that procedures are minimally invasive, leading to faster recovery times and less post-operative discomfort.
The Obesity Control Center is designed specifically for bariatric patients, offering a level of specialization that general hospitals often lack — while operating within the full multispecialty resources of Hospital CYNTAR. From the intake process to the recovery suites, every detail is optimized for the safety and comfort of the weight-loss surgery patient. This dedicated focus allows the surgeons at Hospital CYNTAR to maintain a complication rate far below the global average.
Long-Term Health Outcomes and Reclaiming Vitality
The ultimate measure of any medical procedure is the impact it has on the patient's quality of life. For Deandra, the results were profound. Before surgery, she struggled with high blood pressure and chronic knee pain. Living in a house with many stairs had become a daily struggle [03:20].
Post-surgery, those daily burdens vanished. Deandra noted that climbing stairs became much easier as the weight dropped off. Beyond the physical relief, she experienced a massive boost in energy and self-confidence. "I just feel better, I look better, I have a lot more energy," she shared, emphasizing that the investment in herself was worth every penny.
| Benefit | Before Surgery | After Surgery |
|---|---|---|
| Blood Pressure | Hypertension (High Risk) | Significantly Improved/Stable |
| Mobility | Difficulty with stairs, knee pain | Pain-free climbing, increased agility |
| Energy Levels | Fatigued, low vitality | Significantly more energy for daily tasks |
| Psychological Health | Stress due to chronic illness | Improved confidence and self-image |
Deandra’s journey is a testament to the fact that obesity is a treatable condition. By taking control of her health through Hospital CYNTAR’s Obesity Control Center, she was able to add years to her life and life to her years. Her story serves as an inspiration for anyone currently standing at the crossroads of their own weight loss journey, proving that with the right expertise, a healthier future is just across the border.

00:00 This process appealed to me a lot better because, you know, it's a much shorter amount of time and you know, you still put in the care. Good morning, my name is Deandra Gilbert, I go by Lynn.
00:15 I am from the state of Maryland in the United States and I heard about the OCC through a friend of mine about seven years ago. She had come to have the surgery and she told me about it, and I said okay, well I trust her so, you know, she said it was a great place.
00:30 So I did some research on my own and I liked what I saw, so I came in 2017 to have my first gastric sleeve surgery. Well, I had talked a friend into getting it because, you know, she admired my weight loss because I did really well the first time with the sleeve.
00:54 And I had put on a little bit of weight, but that was on me. But she was kind of nervous but she wanted to get it done too, so I said well, you know, I'll see if I can get a revision. At the time I didn't know that you could do that. And they said yes, I could do a revision, so I came with her in 2020.
01:10 And that experience was pretty much the same as the first one. I did not have any pain, everyone was great. She did really well with her surgery as well, so I only have good things to say about the experience here.
01:25 Yes, I remember it was at a different clinic at the time, it was another building. But I was still very impressed with the facility. The doctors were really nice. Dr. Ortiz came around and you know gave everybody a hug, you know, how is everyone doing?
01:40 But everybody seemed really caring and I received a lot of really good information before I came. So they sent emails and checked on my health and everything, make sure the diet was going well before I showed up. So it was a really, really good experience.
01:58 Well, my initial impression of the way it works in the United States is a lot more complicated. It's a lot more drawn out. When I first was recommended to do bariatric weight loss, there's a long process the US makes you go through, and then they put you on a waiting list for like a year.
02:14 And at the time my health was really in poor shape and I really couldn't wait a year. If your health is in jeopardy and they're telling you you're going to have a heart attack or a stroke, which I was at the time, having me wait another year doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
02:22 So, you know, this process appealed to me a lot better because, you know, it's a much shorter amount of time and you know, you still put in the care to, you know, make sure the patients are okay and understanding, you know, emotionally, psychologically, everything that you're going to go through.
02:37 This facility is amazing. I am really impressed. I had no idea that there was a new facility, so I remember when we pulled up, I was like this isn't the same building. And when I came in I was like wait, this is completely different but, I mean, it's state-of-the-art.
02:50 It's absolutely beautiful. I noticed that some of the procedures are a little different, there's more up-to-date technology. But everyone has been fantastic. After the surgery, we had a presentation by one of the doctors, I believe it's Dr. Alma.
03:06 You know, kind of about what to expect and you know, the different things to look forward to, and that was different than the first two times. So I really appreciated that she gave that information to help people understand what's going on with your surgery and your body.
03:20 Yeah, my health improved a lot. You know, I had high blood pressure, my knees were pretty bad, I have a lot of steps in my house. So I noticed that I could go up the steps much easier each time that I would drop the weight. So, but other than that, you know, I just feel better. You know, I look better, I feel better, a lot more energy.
03:45 And of course, I'm older now, so it's definitely—I'm looking forward to seeing what this impact is going to be. But you know, I'm looking forward to it and I think it's going to be good.
