The Long Struggle: From Childhood Obesity to Keto Failure
Crystal’s story is one that resonates with millions of Americans. She recalls being overweight as early as elementary school [00:19]. By junior high, the social pressures and stigma associated with weight became a significant burden. This early onset of weight issues often points to a metabolic predisposition that makes traditional "eat less, move more" advice incredibly difficult to sustain over a lifetime.
In 2018, Crystal found temporary success with the ketogenic diet, losing an impressive 145 pounds [00:33]. However, as is the case for the vast majority of people who lose weight through restrictive dieting, maintenance is the real challenge. Crystal’s experience proves that while diets can work for a season, they often fail to address the underlying hormonal signals—like ghrelin, the hunger hormone—that a vertical sleeve gastrectomy can successfully regulate.
Pregnancy and the Reality of Weight Regain
Life events often disrupt weight loss progress. For Crystal, getting pregnant in 2019 and again in 2022 led to the return of the weight she had worked so hard to lose [00:41]. Pregnancy alters the body’s metabolism significantly, and for those already battling obesity, these changes can be lasting. She realized that to be the mother her children deserved, she needed a more sustainable and powerful tool for long-term weight management.
Crystal’s decision to wait until after her final child was born [01:00] highlights the importance of timing and family planning in the bariatric journey. It ensures that the surgical tool is used at a time when the patient can focus entirely on their recovery and new nutritional habits without the massive hormonal shifts of pregnancy interfering with the weight loss phase.
Why Hospital CYNTAR and the Obesity Control Center in Tijuana?
Choosing a facility for weight loss surgery in Mexico is a decision that requires immense research. Crystal discovered the Obesity Control Center (OCC) via social media nearly a decade ago [00:11]. What sets Hospital CYNTAR apart is its status as a JCI-accredited multispecialty hospital whose bariatric program is an internationally accredited center of excellence. For patients traveling from the US, the proximity of Tijuana to San Diego makes it an incredibly convenient choice for medical tourism.
The bariatric program is led by Dr. Ariel Ortiz, a pioneer in bariatric surgery with over 25 years of experience. Hospital CYNTAR focuses on a comprehensive approach, including pre-operative preparation and extensive post-operative support, which Crystal found reassuring as she navigated the process of traveling abroad for a major medical procedure.

The Day of Surgery: A Seamless Experience
One of the most common fears regarding surgery in Mexico is the unknown hospital environment. Crystal describes her arrival as being filled with excitement rather than nerves [01:29]. The process at Hospital CYNTAR is designed for international patients, featuring modern recovery rooms that feel more like high-end hotel suites than sterile hospital wards.
Crystal explains the sequence of events: arriving in the morning, moving to her private room, receiving pre-operative medications, and the professional administration of an IV [01:36]. The transparency of the staff—explaining every step before and as it happened—is a hallmark of Hospital CYNTAR’s patient-centered care model.
Critique of the US Healthcare and Insurance System
A poignant moment in Crystal’s testimonial is her comparison between the US healthcare system and her experience in Mexico [02:03]. She notes that in the United States, insurance companies often put patients through "countless loopholes" just to qualify for life-saving surgery. She feels that the US system often profits more from people remaining sick than becoming healthy.
By choosing self-pay bariatric surgery in Tijuana, Crystal took her health into her own hands. She didn't have to wait for an insurance adjuster to decide if her BMI was high enough or if her comorbidities were severe enough to "earn" a chance at a new life. This autonomy is why thousands of people from the US and Canada travel to Mexico for gastric sleeve and gastric bypass procedures every year.
Lifelong Support: Staff, Care, and Success
Recovery is not just about the hours spent in the operating room; it's about the days, weeks, and months that follow. Crystal raves about the "OCC Family," a term used to describe the lifelong bond between the medical staff and their patients [02:55]. Every staff member at Hospital CYNTAR, from the receptionists to the bariatric surgeons, is dedicated to the patient’s success.
Crystal even mentions the specialized cafe that serves protein smoothies designed for post-op patients [03:25]. Small details like these, along with the seamless transition to the Hotel Lucerna for the initial recovery phase, ensure that patients feel safe and supported even when they are traveling alone [03:37].
Top Reasons to Consider Gastric Sleeve Surgery
- Significant Weight Loss: Most patients lose 60-70% of their excess weight within the first year.
- Resolution of Comorbidities: Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea often improve or disappear entirely.
- Hormonal Balance: The removal of the fundus part of the stomach drastically reduces the hunger hormone, ghrelin.
- Short Recovery Time: Most patients return to work within 1-2 weeks thanks to laparoscopic (minimally invasive) techniques.
Final Advice: The Sooner, The Better
Crystal’s closing sentiment is a powerful message to anyone sitting on the fence: "The sooner the better, just come as soon as you can" [00:01]. Many patients regret waiting so long to undergo the procedure, wishing they had reclaimed their health and mobility years earlier.
If you are looking for a safe, affordable, and world-class medical facility, Hospital CYNTAR in Tijuana offers a proven track record. As Crystal says, the staff makes the process easy, even for those traveling by themselves. It is an investment in your future, your health, and your family.

[00:00] That's what I would say: sooner the better, just come as soon as you can. Because it is worth it, 100%.
[00:11] My name is Crystal Marie Seibert. I'm from Phoenix, Arizona, and I found out about OCC via social media on Instagram about a decade ago.
[00:18] My entire life, I've actually been overweight ever since I was in elementary school. And I would say probably starting in junior high, I kind of noticed that I was bigger than a lot of the other kids and would start getting made fun of in junior high.
[00:33] Now, in 2018, I did do the keto diet, and I was successful with that, being very strict with that. And then I had lost 145 pounds in 2018.
[00:41] But then I got pregnant in 2019 with my now five-year-old. So she was born in 2020. And being pregnant with her, I gained all of the weight back, plus some.
[00:56] I also was talking to my husband and said, "You know, hey, I want to go get the surgery done and I want to go to OCC," but we knew that we were going to have one more child.
[01:08] So we decided to hold off, and then we had our last baby in 2022. And so then it was just a matter of the planning, finances, making sure everything was all planned and set up for me to be able to come to OCC and have the surgery done.
[01:21] And so yeah, we basically had our last baby in 2022 and then planned it out, and now I'm here!
[01:29] I was not nervous at all. I was just excited.
[01:34] I get here in the morning, go upstairs, get into our room that we're going to be spending the night in, and then getting all of the pre-operative medications and the IV in and everything.
[01:44] And everybody's super welcoming, very explanatory of everything that's going to happen as it happens, before it happens, and everything.
[01:52] And then get into the operating room, and then next thing you know, you're awake and you're just, okay, now my stomach is smaller and let's get to recovering.
[02:03] I will say this: I didn't even want to look at other facilities in the United States, personally, when it comes to the actual health care and insurance companies in the United States.
[02:15] There are so many loopholes that we have to go through just to be able to be healthy. So I feel like our healthcare and insurance companies would much rather us be sick.
[02:26] And then they kind of help wean down, okay, so this person has a semi-better chance of getting better, so we'll go ahead and pay for this person but not this other person.
[02:34] And so they very much pick and choose who they actually want to pay for from the insurance companies, rather than coming here to Tijuana, Mexico to OCC.
[02:44] Then I can make the decision for myself and say, "I'm going to do this for myself," rather than relying on another company to choose me as somebody that would be successful.
[02:54] Oh, the staff is amazing, doctors are amazing, everybody's warm and welcoming. I've said it before, it's the OCC family and I'm now a part of it, and it feels amazing.
[03:07] I would definitely recommend OCC to others, and I already have and will continue to do so. I will continue to represent the OCC family, 100%.
[03:17] It is amazing here from even just the moment that you walk in—the receptionists, the nurses, the staff, the doctors, the cafe with the protein smoothies that I wish I could make myself.
[03:30] To just the recovery process, to even going to the Hotel Lucerna. It's very easy going back and forth, and I'm here by myself too.
[03:38] So if people are afraid to even come by themselves, there's no reason to be afraid to come by yourself.
