Dermabrasion Treatment Abroad

Overview

One of the most popular treatments for men and women of all ages is dermabrasion, which is performed to make the skin appear smooth and refined. There are three important procedures that may be chosen to reduce the look of fine lines, wrinkles and acne scars, including a chemical peel, which works well to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and dermabrasion or dermaplaning, utilized to reduce acne scarring or other blemishes.

Men and women are ideal candidates for dermabrasion, yet there are several factors that bring different results to individuals including age, skin type, coloring and medical history. It is important to consult with a doctor before the procedure, since darker skin tones may result in a permanent blotchy appearance and other patients might experience allergic rashes with the procedure if they have predisposing conditions.

The procedure is safe and effective if patients follow doctor's orders after the procedure, including staying out of sunlight for a certain period of time. Most swelling is reduced within just a few days, and other after effects typically disappear when doctor’s advice is taken and followed.

Common Dermabrasion Treatment Procedure

Before a dermabrasion procedure, the patient must undergo a consultation to discuss expectations with the doctor, and how certain factors like age, skin type and other conditions may affect the outcome.

Anesthesia is administered locally, so that the face or area undergoing dermabrasion is numbed. In very rare cases, patients request a general anesthesia if they are going to have a large area done and the pain is too much for them to handle. Since the dermabrasion procedure does not last very long, many patients find that a local anesthesia combined with a mild sedative is enough to go through the procedure.

Depending on the area undergoing dermabrasion, the procedure will last anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours. If there is deep scarring present, the surgeon may opt to perform the dermabrasion in stages smooth skin layers. During the procedure, the surgeon smoothes away scarred or damaged layers of skin using a motorized burr containing minute diamond particles. Using the small diamond particles, the surgeon is able to brush away as many levels as necessary to remove scar tissue in a safe manner.

Once the surgeon has smoothed the area as much as possible, an ointment or other type of healing dressing is applied to the face. After the treatment, the skin will look red and swollen, but that is to be expected. In the days to follow, the skin will form a scab over the area and then fall off to reveal pink, new skin. Once the scab has fallen off, the pink skin will feel tight and itchy, but the ointment given by the surgeon should help relieve any discomfort. Using the ointment regularly not only helps with discomfort, but also reduces any itchiness and scabbing immediately after the procedure.

Complete healing takes several weeks before the skin color returns back to normal, and the doctor will offer strict instructions to avoid alcohol, sunlight or any physical activities that interfere with healing.

Who Benefits from Dermabrasion Procedures?

Patients undergoing a dermabrasion receive a variety of benefits. Dramatic results in the smooth appearance of the skin and the reduction of fine lines, wrinkles and scarring are just some of the benefits that patients see after the treatment. An increased self-confidence in the new appearance helps patients in their social life.
