Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy for Hair Transplantation
Platelet-Rich Plasma or PRP is a procedure which speeds up the healing process. Initially used in sports medicine to speed healing of an injury or wound, the procedure is now also used to improve skin texture, wrinkles and lines and to enhance healing and hair growth after hair transplantation.
After the hair transplantation procedure, the new transplanted hair follicles should thrive and produce new hairs. Unfortunately, some of the hair follicles will not adapt to the new environment. Thank to PRP the percentage of hairs which do not adapt is considerably diminished and the success rate of the procedure is increased.
PRP not only increases the survival rate of hair follicles, but also speeds up healing with minimal scarring.
PRP is blood plasma with a much higher concentration of platelets than normal. Before the procedure, the doctor will take some blood from the patient, will add calcium chloride solution in it to speed the process and place it in a centrifuge for around 20 minutes. During this time the platelets will separate from the rest of the blood, making their concentration three to four times the normal level.
Then the clear platelet rich plasma will be injected in the skin areas where hair will be transplanted, but will also be used in the storage solution for the harvested hair follicles.
