Courage Through Treatment: Breast Cancer Care in Tijuana, Mexico

Receiving a complex cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming, testing a person's physical endurance, emotional strength, and hope for the future. When traditional medical interventions fall short or offer limited possibilities, seeking specialized integrative oncology programs abroad can provide a transformative path toward healing, renewed mobility, and enhanced vitality. Holistic patient care combines advanced diagnostic accuracy, personalized biological therapies, and deep emotional support to restore both body and spirit.

In this inspiring patient account, we explore the extraordinary healing experience of Erika Henkelman, a 45-year-old mother from Port Sydney, Ontario, Canada. Facing advanced ductal invasive carcinoma and late-stage metastatic complications, Erika sought specialized Breast Cancer Treatment in Tijuana Mexico to regain control over her health. Her remarkable transformation at the ITC Immunity Therapy Center underscores the profound impact of integrative oncology, comprehensive inpatient monitoring, and compassionate patient-centered healthcare.

Early Symptoms and Initial Carcinoma Diagnosis

Long-standing health difficulties such as persistent fatigue and digestive imbalances often serve as subtle, early indicators of deeper systemic issues. For many patients, recognizing that vague symptoms might stem from an aggressive underlying malignancy requires persistent self-advocacy and thorough medical consultation.

As documented in the video testimony at [00:00:02], Erika Henkelman from Port Sydney, Ontario, shared her journey. After struggling for over a decade with fatigue and digestive troubles, she was formally diagnosed in January 2022 with invasive ductal carcinoma after discovering a large, softball-sized mass in her breast tissue.

Back Spasms and Uncovering Hidden Sacral Lesions

Metastatic progression can introduce critical health risks that remain unnoticed during standard localized evaluations. When unexplained lower back discomfort or physical spasms arise, comprehensive imaging is essential to identify hidden bone lesions before catastrophic fractures or spinal instability occur.

As revealed at [00:01:35], after experiencing severe back spasms in 2025, Erika sought care at the ITC Immunity Therapy Center. Urgent CT scans with Dr. Bautista immediately uncovered critical, closely grouped lesions on her sacrum that had gone unmentioned in her home country's prior routine scans.

Five Weeks of Intensive Inpatient Healing

Addressing high-risk metastatic conditions demands immediate, multi-specialty intervention supported by round-the-clock nursing care. An intensive inpatient stay allows medical teams to deliver specialized therapies, manage acute symptoms, and offer profound emotional reassurance throughout challenging physical protocols.

As described at [00:02:43], Erika entered an intensive inpatient program for over five weeks. She experienced deeply attentive, individualized care from specialists and dedicated overnight nurses who assisted her through arduous pulmonary clearing processes, treating her with genuine human dignity.

Key Pillars of Compassionate Inpatient Cancer Support

  • Immediate access to multi-specialty consultations and personalized diagnostic reviews.
  • Dedicated 24/7 bedside nursing care during acute therapeutic procedures.
  • Attentive symptom management tailored to relieve severe pain and respiratory distress.
  • Empathetic medical communication that addresses patient concerns and family fears.
  • Holistic monitoring ensuring physical stability and emotional strength throughout recovery.

Clear Bone Scans and Milestone Celebrations

Achieving physical turnarounds after relying on mobility aids like walkers highlights the immense potential of targeted biological and integrative medical treatments. Objective diagnostic verification through advanced imaging offers tangible proof of healing and renewed hope.

As highlighted at [00:04:27], having initially left the facility relying on a walker, Erika returned fully mobile and active. Her follow-up PET scan confirmed complete clearance of cancer in her bones, prompting joyous celebrations among her family and care team while establishing a new strategy to address small residual liver lesions.

Integrative Therapies and Targeted IV Care

Viewing the human body as an interconnected biological ecosystem rather than isolated compartments is central to integrative medicine. Combining specialized intravenous infusions, natural immune boosters, and tailored nutritional protocols works synergistically to strengthen cellular health while targeting malignant growths.

As explained at [00:05:46], Erika emphasized the value of holistic healing. [00:00:02] Hello, my name is Erica Hinkelman.

[00:00:05] And I'm 45 and I am from a really small town in Muskoka, Ontario. And my town is called Port Sydney.

[00:00:13] And I was first diagnosed with cancer in January of 2022.

[00:00:21] I had been struggling with health issues, mostly fatigue and digestive issues for over a decade. And so, finally the very beginning of January 2022, I think.

[00:00:37] 2022, I finally went to my family doctor and said I really think this is cancerous.

[00:00:44] And by that point it had become like a softball size, so it was quite large. It really took over my breast and essentially ate all the tissue around it. Like there was very little left there.

[00:01:00] Um, it was diagnosed as um ductal invasive carcinoma, which is very common. So, it was strongly suggested to me that I started with the ACT chemo and um this was a very very difficult decision for me. I really wanted to come someplace like this, but I at that time in my life, it just didn't feel possible.

[00:01:33] And then yeah, last summer of 2025, I was just having like random back spasms, lower back pain. And so, I knew that if I'm facing cancer again, that there was no way I was doing what I did before. So, yeah, so September 2025, I came here within the first 2 days, I had a CT and I was meeting with Dr. Bautista. Like very to the point, very caring.

[00:02:14] He told me about lesions on my sacrum that I had no idea that they existed. They were really close together and the way he explained it to me was basically I was sitting on a ticking time bomb of another bone that could break at any moment. He was very concerned about that. Which he should be and I had no idea. They were never mentioned in my scans at home, unfortunately.

[00:02:43] And so, I was brought into the hospital here, the inpatient program. And I ended up being in there for over 5 weeks. So, it was nobody's plan, but it's absolutely what I needed. And the care I got, I still get emotional about it because the care was phenomenal. Every specialist that was brought into my room was so kind and thorough. They all gave me time to hear my concerns, answer my questions. Everybody was extremely attentive and kind to me.

[00:03:21] And really treated me like a human with a family and a whole story. Instead of just a number. And I'm very thankful for that. The staff here, I remember one evening a nurse staying with me almost the entire night. And I believe like arrangements were made with the staff that there would be an extra nurse that night to stay with me. So, that I could really work at trying to get um, needed to leave my lungs out of my lungs. It's a very awful process and I was so appreciative of his care. It was remarkable. And I'm so thankful that ITC works with absolutely phenomenal um, people that they brought in as specialists um, for the time that I needed them. And nothing is guaranteed, but when I come here, I know that everybody cares.

[00:04:24] And they care about my journey um, coming back this time because I left with a walker. Um, and I've returned fully able and capable. Um, it's been kind of like a celebration tour. So, now um, I have had a PET scan. Um, there is no cancer in my bones at all.

[00:04:52] And so, we got my PET scan results just this past Friday. And on Saturday, I went for an MRI. Um, and so, I'm really thankful and my whole family and all of the staff here have been celebrating that my bones are clear right now and that is worth celebrating. And then, we've also created a plan of what the next steps are to continue to fight the really small lesions that are on my liver. And if I had stayed in Canada, I mean, I was told that there was no hope for that. I was told that really like I'm at the end of my life.

[00:05:32] But yeah, I'm getting to experience healing here. I'm getting to experience like a quality of life that is beyond what I would be experiencing if I hadn't come here.

[00:05:46] Yeah, my message would be to come and try it. That we are made holistically. So, we are not in a series of compartments, but we are one holistic mass of cells and emotions and thoughts. Um, and here um, and with other treatments that are out there, but like at ITC, they do a phenomenal job of treating you holistically, but also supporting every cell in your body with IVs and with a series of other natural treatments. Um, which are used worldwide, but not commonly used in North America. And well, not commonly used in Canada and the US.

[00:06:40] And so, to come to one place and have all of those things, as well as your nutrition um, cared for is it's absolutely worth the money. I really strongly encourage people to be willing to ask for help and support. Be willing to set up a crowd funding. Um, seek out the support you need to make it happen because it's absolutely worth it. There are no guarantees, but on this journey that is going to be hard no matter what you choose, this is the place to come.
