The kidney is an organ that consists of many tiny parts called nephrons or glomeruli. The glomeruli are responsible for filtering the waste from the blood and dislodging them from the body through small drops of urine that are stored in the bladder.
Glomerulonephritis is a disease of the kidneys in which the glomeruli begin to die rapidly until the kidney does not have enough glomeruli to function properly.
When this happens, the kidneys become unable to filter waste from the blood, so the urine is contaminated with body proteins and may bleed.
This disease causes acute renal failure (loss of kidney function in a space of weeks or months). The cause of glomerulonephritis is unknown and is not necessarily related to people with a history of kidney disease.
