Meet Dr. Martínez: Bariatric Surgeon at Hospital CYNTAR in Tijuana, Mexico

Choosing a bariatric surgeon is one of the most important decisions a patient will make on their weight loss journey. Behind every successful procedure is a surgeon whose training, experience, and philosophy of care make all the difference. In this featured bio, Dr. Martínez, a bariatric surgeon at Hospital CYNTAR in Tijuana, Mexico, shares his path into minimally invasive bariatric surgery — from his roots in Tijuana to advanced training in Spain, and more than two decades of experience refining his craft alongside one of the field’s most respected teams.

Roots in Tijuana, Trained Across Borders

Dr. Martínez’s connection to Tijuana is personal: he was born in the city and speaks with genuine affection about practicing on this side of the border [00:08]. He grew up locally, attended public schools, and went on to the State University before pursuing his residency training in Mexico City [00:18].

That local foundation, combined with national-level surgical training, gave him both a deep understanding of the patients he serves and the rigorous credentials patients look for. After completing his residency, he became a board-certified general surgeon — but, as he puts it, after finishing you always want to do something more.

Advanced Training in Spain

That drive led him abroad. Dr. Martínez was given the opportunity to pursue advanced surgical training in Spain, where he spent about a year and took his first course in bariatric surgery [00:26]. The field immediately struck him as fascinating, even if he hadn’t yet decided it would become his specialty.

During his year in Spain, he focused on minimally invasive surgery [00:41] — the foundation of the laparoscopic techniques that define modern bariatric procedures. He then returned to Tijuana, where the next chapter of his career would take shape.

A Philosophy Built on Prevention

Back in Tijuana, Dr. Martínez met Dr. Ortiz and Dr. López Corella at a time when bariatric surgery was still very new [00:49]. He gradually worked his way up through increasingly complex minimally invasive bariatric procedures — and discovered work he truly loves.

What stands out most in his philosophy is his approach to safety. As he explains, you don’t prepare to treat complications — you prepare to avoid them [01:12]. For Dr. Martínez, doing everything the right way means having the knowledge, the technology, and a fully prepared surgical team surrounding the patient. This preventive mindset is exactly what international patients should look for when choosing where to have surgery abroad.

Two Decades of Bariatric Expertise

Passion paired with experience is what gives patients confidence. Dr. Martínez speaks with pride about the results he and his team have achieved over the course of 20 years of work in bariatric surgery [01:42]. That longevity reflects not only technical skill, but a consistent commitment to refining outcomes year after year.

[00:08] I was born in this town, so I love being here on this side of the border, in Tijuana. I grew up here, went to public schools, and then to the State University, and then after that I did my residency training in Mexico City. [00:26] After I finished with the residency, you always want to do something else. So I was already a certified general surgeon, and as it turns out, I got an opportunity to do some advanced training in Spain. So I went over there for about a year and I got my first course in bariatric surgery. [00:41] It seemed very interesting, although at that moment I didn't decide that I wanted to be a bariatric surgeon. So I finished my course over there in minimally invasive surgery for a year, and then came back to Tijuana. [00:49] And this is where I met Dr. Ortiz and Dr. López Corella. Bariatric surgery was very limited, so it was kind of new for me to be involved in minimally invasive bariatric surgery. [01:05] Gradually, I moved my way up to doing other procedures, from the least aggressive to the more aggressive, and it's just something that you love doing. [01:12] It's very important to do everything in the right way, to make sure that you have the knowledge, the technology, and the people that surround you — they have to be all prepared. [01:26] You don't prepare to treat bad situations or complications; you get prepared to avoid them. [01:33] And that's something that I'm passionate about, and it's something that we've been working on over the course of so many years. [01:42] And we're really, really proud of the results that we've had over the course of 20 years of working in bariatric surgery.
