A coronary angiography is a procedure that uses a contrast material and x-rays to see how the blood flows through the arteries in the heart. The procedure is usually performed along with cardiac catheterization, which measures the pressure in the heart chambers. A catheter will be introduced through an artery into the heart and the contrast material will be injected to detect any blockages in the blood flow.
If the heart's arteries are blocked or narrowed by a buildup of cells, cholesterol or plaque an angioplasty is needed to prevent a possible heart attack. The purpose of this procedure is to open blocked arteries and restore normal blood flow to the heart. A catheter is inserted through an artery until the heart artery, across the blockage. A thin balloon is inflated at the end of the catheter to push the plaque to the side to restore blood flow.
