Read more detailsChoosing the right IUI clinic in Spain involves looking beyond just the price. Prioritize clinics with high success rates for your age group, experienced embryologists, and a supportive, multilingual patient care team. Ensure they hold national and international accreditations, like those from the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF), which guarantees quality and ethical standards are met.
When you're making such an important decision, several key factors should guide your choice. A reputable clinic will be transparent about its processes and success statistics.
Spanish law is very progressive regarding assisted reproduction. Clinics in Spain can legally provide IUI treatment to single women, heterosexual couples, and female same-sex couples. There is no legal requirement for marriage. The upper age limit for women to receive treatment is generally around 50, though individual clinics may have their own policies based on health assessments.
Spain's legal framework for assisted reproduction is one of the most advanced in the world, making it a popular destination. Clinics are required to operate under these clear guidelines.
Key legal points include the anonymity of sperm donors, meaning the child will not be able to know the donor's identity. All donors undergo extensive medical and psychological screening as mandated by law. Before starting treatment, clinics will require you to sign informed consent forms, confirming you understand the procedure, its potential outcomes, and the legal implications. You'll also need to provide identification, like a passport, and undergo some preliminary health checks to ensure you are a suitable candidate for IUI.
IUI success rates in Spanish clinics vary based on factors like the woman's age, the cause of infertility, and whether donor or partner sperm is used. Generally, clinics report a per-cycle success rate of 10-20%. Reputable clinics will provide their specific statistics, often broken down by age, which is a more accurate measure than a single, generalized number.
It's important to have realistic expectations. Success is not guaranteed in a single cycle, and many patients undergo multiple IUI attempts.
Clinics in Spain are required to report their results to the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF) registry. When you consult with a clinic, ask for their latest success rates, specifically for IUI with ovulation induction (if applicable) and for patients in your age bracket. A good clinic will be transparent and explain how their results compare to national averages. They should also discuss the cumulative success rate over several cycles, as this often provides a more encouraging picture.
Top Spanish fertility clinics have dedicated international departments to ensure a smooth experience. This support includes multilingual staff (often fluent in English, French, German, and Italian), assistance with travel and accommodation logistics, and coordination of preliminary tests that can be done in your home country to minimize your stay in Spain.
These clinics understand the unique challenges faced by patients traveling from abroad. Their goal is to make the process as stress-free as possible.
The process for IUI with donor sperm in Spain is highly regulated and straightforward. Clinics use their own licensed sperm banks or collaborate with accredited ones. Donors are anonymous and undergo rigorous screening for genetic and infectious diseases. The clinic's medical team will select a donor that matches your physical characteristics (phenotype) like hair color, eye color, and ethnicity.
Spain's strict laws on sperm donation ensure safety, quality, and anonymity for all parties involved.
Once you decide to proceed, the clinic will manage the entire donor selection process. You will not be able to see photos or detailed personal profiles of donors, but you will be assured of a close physical match. The clinic coordinates the timing of the sperm thaw with your natural or stimulated ovulation cycle. The IUI procedure itself is then carried out just like an IUI with partner sperm, with the prepared donor sample being placed directly into the uterus.
For international patients, Spanish clinics are very efficient. Typically, you can complete an entire IUI cycle with just one short trip to Spain lasting 2-5 days. The clinic can coordinate with your local doctor for initial tests and ultrasound monitoring. You would only travel to Spain for the final monitoring scan and the insemination procedure itself.
The goal of most clinics is to minimize your travel time and disruption to your daily life while ensuring the highest medical standards.
The process usually starts with a remote consultation. The clinic will then send you a treatment plan, and you can begin any prescribed medication or initial monitoring in your home country. Once your ovarian follicles are close to the ideal size, you will travel to the clinic in Spain. You might have one final scan upon arrival, followed by the IUI procedure 24-36 hours later. After the procedure, you are generally free to travel back home the same day or the next.
Before starting IUI, Spanish clinics require a standard set of diagnostic tests to ensure the treatment is appropriate and safe for you. For the woman, this includes blood tests for hormone levels (like AMH), infectious disease screening (Hepatitis B/C, HIV, Syphilis), and a gynecological ultrasound. A hysterosalpingography (HSG) is also vital to confirm at least one fallopian tube is open.
These initial tests are crucial for the clinic's medical team to create a personalized and effective treatment plan.
If using a partner's sperm, a comprehensive semen analysis is mandatory to check sperm count, motility, and morphology. Many of these tests can be performed by your local doctor and the results sent to the Spanish clinic for review. This saves you an extra trip and allows the clinic to confirm your suitability for IUI before you commit to traveling. The clinic will provide a detailed list of the required tests during your initial consultation.
Yes, absolutely. Spain's assisted reproduction laws are among the most inclusive in Europe. Fertility clinics throughout the country legally and routinely provide IUI and other fertility treatments to single women and female same-sex couples. These patient groups are welcomed and receive the same high standard of care, typically using sperm from an anonymous donor.
The legal framework explicitly supports the right of every woman to form a family, regardless of her marital status or sexual orientation.
For female same-sex couples, a popular option is ROPA (Reception of Oocytes from Partner), though this involves IVF, not IUI. For IUI, one partner would undergo the insemination using donor sperm. Clinics are experienced in guiding both single women and couples through the process, from selecting a sperm donor to performing the procedure, ensuring a supportive and non-discriminatory environment.
Your first consultation, which can often be done via video call, is a comprehensive meeting with a fertility specialist. The doctor will review your complete medical history, discuss any previous fertility treatments, and analyze the results of your preliminary tests. This is your opportunity to ask questions and understand the clinic's approach and proposed IUI treatment plan.
This initial meeting is designed to be informative and to establish a clear path forward for your treatment journey.
During the consultation, the specialist will explain the IUI process in detail, including medication protocols (if any), monitoring, and the insemination procedure itself. They will provide a realistic outlook on success rates based on your specific situation. You will also likely speak with a patient coordinator who can explain the logistical aspects, and answer any non-medical questions. The goal is for you to leave the consultation feeling informed, comfortable, and confident in your decision.
Spanish fertility clinics are legally bound by both Spain's Data Protection Act and the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). These are some of the strictest data privacy laws globally. Clinics must implement robust technical and organizational measures to protect your sensitive medical data, ensuring confidentiality and security at all times.
Patient privacy is a top priority, and clinics take extensive measures to safeguard your personal and medical information.
All communication, medical records, and personal details are handled with the utmost discretion. Staff are trained in data protection protocols, and access to your information is restricted to authorized medical personnel directly involved in your care. When you begin treatment, the clinic will provide you with their privacy policy and require your explicit consent for data processing, clearly outlining how your information will be used and protected throughout your treatment journey.

DO NOT USE THIS CLINIC. Feels like a complete scam. Terrible communication, really made so many mistakes and never rectified anything, complete disparity between number f follicles and eggs collected. After speaking with many other clinics the evidence suggests the terrible result through fault of the clinic. Would have been great to have had this discussion with a doctor after the egg collection but have been refused multiple times so haven't had any feedback or debrief despite begging to speak with someone for months. Absolute shambles, essentially robbed me of 8k. Please do not use this clinic, there are much much better alternatives. Everything from start to finish was appalling service, little to no communication and mistakes. If I could rate less than 0 I absolutely would.
