A liver transplant is a surgical procedure in which a patient’s diseased liver (or those who have liver failure) is replaced with a healthy liver either from a donor (usually related to the recipient). The new liver takes over the removal of waste products in the body and the production of bile, a substance responsible for breaking down fats in the small intestine.
Acibadem Healthcare Group, Istanbul, Turkey, is a JCI accredited healthcare institution that provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services since 1991. The Acibadem Health Group operates 18 full-service general hospitals and 12 outpatient clinics in Turkey. Acibadem is now offering an affordable liver transplant package which patients can avail in Acıbadem Atakent University Hospital, Istanbul and Acıbadem Bursa Hospital.
In Turkey, there is a law that indicates that the donor should be at least 4th degree relative of the patient. Therefore, the patient is advised that he or she should bring their own donor.
The liver transplant process at Acibadem involves three phases namely:
1. Referral and Evaluation: during the application or referral of a patient for liver transplant, the transplant coordinators will collect the physical assessment, past medical history with results of diagnostic tests as well as a description of his or her current condition and legal paperwork. A transplant evaluation will be scheduled for the patient, which will include laboratory tests, radiological imaging, cardiac tests, general health exam, supplementary interventions, psychological evaluation, meetings with social workers along with addiction and financial counseling.
2. Transplant Surgery: The native liver is removed and the new liver is placed in the same anatomic location.
3. Post Transplantation: The recipient would need follow-up outpatient visits to ensure his or her general health and the functioning of the transplanted organ. These follow-up visits will commence via telephone or internet anytime the patient has a concern or question. Also, the donor will have a physical examination prior to discharge from the hospital to ensure his or her general health and the functioning of the remaining organ.
