Follicular Unit Transplantation

Follicular Unit Transplantation

Follicular Unit Transplantation or FUT is a procedure through which groups of one or maximum 4 hairs, also known as follicular units, are transplanted from the donor area to the recipient (bald) area. The follicular units are usually taken from the sides and back of the scalp, where hair is more resistant to balding.

How is FUT performed?

The part of the scalp chosen for the transplant will be anesthetized and the surgeon will remove a strip of tissue from the donor area. This strip will be then divided into follicular units by using microscopic dissection methods. In a single session the surgeon can transplant thousands of grafts. Tiny holes will be made in the recipient area, also known as recipient sites, where the grafts will be placed, after they have been preserved in a special substance which mimics the body's own fluids.
The time of the procedure depends on how many hair units are being transplanted. For example the transplantation of 800 grafts will take several hours, while 2,400 grafts or more will take an entire day. A maximum of 4,000 hair units can be transplanted in a single session.
Depending on the situation, the donor area will be closed either with absorbable sutures, which will not need to be removed, or staples. For larger donor areas, more sessions will be needed for a perfect result.

After the procedure, the patient will feel mild discomfort and soreness, and will experience scalp swelling. In this case painkillers are administered if necessary.

Benefits of Follicular Unit Transplantation

  • Produces natural looking results
  • High hair density in only one session
  • Short recovery time
  • Minimally invasive

Recovery period after FUT - Follicular Unit Transplantation procedure

As FUT is a minimally invasive procedure, patients will be able to resume normal activities almost immediately. Still, instructions will be given on what the patient should and should not do for a perfect result and recovery time. The patient will return to the clinic for a follow up visit, 10 days after the procedure.

If the doctor's instructions are followed, the hair transplant will be undetectable after 10 days or less. After 3 weeks the patient can get a haircut, after 4 weeks the hair can be dyed and after 6 months the transplanted hair starts to look thicker and fuller.
