Education and Rehabilitation Centre, Konstancin, Poland Profile Details

The beginnings of the Education and Rehabilitation Centre occurred in 1977 when, on the initiative of Professor Marian Weiss, Dr.Med.Sc. (co-founder of the Polish School of Rehabilitation), the "Saturn" Cooperative built a basic vocational school with a dormitory at ul. Gąsiorowskiego 12-14 in Konstancin, as a supported employment enterprise.

This enterprise has dealt with the vocational education and rehabilitation of the physically disabled, prepared them for an independent life, and helped them to find employment and adapt to the environment. The curriculum is based on an individual approach to students in order to develop their talents and skills, as well as compensate for their disabilities. Due to its novel approach, the centre has served as a model for special education in Poland.

In 1990, the centre quickly adjusted to the new socioeconomic conditions. The students began to receive education in the areas of information technology and economics, which were in demand on the job market. At the same time, the enterprise developed in the fields of treatment and rehabilitation: widespread rehabilitation services have been offered since 1992, while in 1994 an outpatient facility was created and the first rehabilitation stays were arranged.

A breakthrough for the facility came in the year 2001, when the enterprise was converted into a limited liability company. A non-public healthcare facility, including an outpatient rehabilitation facility and an inpatient rehabilitation ward, was created; the office and administration, as well as the hotel and training divisions, were commissioned for use. The following years saw the completion of subsequent projects: in 2002 a cryochamber was inaugurated, in 2003 a swimming pool was opened, and in 2006 the construction of the Department of One-Day Surgery, Rheumatic Orthopaedics and Spinal Surgery was completed.

Meanwhile, the nationwide Outpatient Rehabilitation Facility network was being created:

  • 2002 – Branch No. 1, ul. Wasilkowskiego, Warsaw (transformed into Branch No. 5, in 2006)
  • 2003 – Branch No. 2, ul. Gałczyńskiego, Warsaw
  • 2005 – Branch No. 3, ul. Krasińskiego, Wrocław
  • 2006 – Branch No. 4, ul. Witolińska, Warsaw (moved to ul. Majdańska, Warsaw, in 2008)
  • 2006 – Branch No. 5, ul. Komisji Edukacji Narodowej, Warsaw
  • 2007 – Rehabilitation Clinic, ul. Warszawska, Białystok

Education and Rehabilitation Centre Treatments Offered

Department of One-Day Surgery, Rheumatic Orthopaedics and Spinal Surgery / Konstancin

Rheumatic orthopaedics
Pathological states falling into the broad category of rheumatoid illnesses – affecting in particular joints, but also tendons, ligaments and muscles – are associated with locomotor dysfunction. Degenerative, deforming changes leading to disability may develop in advanced stages of the disease.

The following prophylactic, corrective and reconstructive procedures for rheumatoid arthritis are conducted at the Education and Rehabilitation Centre:

  • Total alloplasty (endoprosthesis implantation) of the hip, knee or metacarpophalangeal joints
  • Corrective surgery of the hands, elbows, knees or feet deformed by inflammation
  • Prophylactic and reconstructive tendon surgery: finger extensor and flexor tenosynovectomy; torn tendon reconstruction
  • Peripheral nerve compression syndrome surgery (carpal tunnel syndrome, etc).

Spinal surgery
The spine is the central anatomical structure of the human body – it constitutes the axis of, and support for, the skeleton. Disorders of the spine are among the most prevalent diseases of civilisation. They develop as a result of a sedentary lifestyle – hours spent behind a desk or in the car, physical inactivity, or being overweight. Untreated, or treated improperly, they may cause chronic pain of the lumbar, thoracic or cervical spine; motor, sensory and vegetative limb dysfunction; and even permanent disability. If rehabilitation and pharmacological treatment prove insufficient, surgery may be the only efficient treatment method.

At our Education and Rehabilitation Centre, we use modern surgical methods for discopathy, including two that are unique in the country:

Endoscopic lumbar nucleotomy using the ENDOSPINE technique. The procedure involves X-ray identification of the pathologically changed section of the spine. Then, a 2 cm incision into the skin is made, allowing insertion of an endoscope containing a camera and a light source. The surgeon views the inside of the spinal canal on a monitor and removes the disc with surgical instruments, aided by the endoscope. The procedure lasts approximately one hour, after which the endoscope is withdrawn, and the wound is stitched and dressed. After 24 hours, the patient is discharged home. Due to the minimally invasive nature of the procedure and little damage to the paraspinal tissues, the recovery period is shorter than that following operations performed using the traditional method.
Transcutaneous lumbar discectomy – coblation nucleoplasty. This procedure is conducted under local anaesthesia. A thin electrode, which can generate pulses causing the breakup of organic molecules in the nucleus pulposus, is inserted into the disc under X-ray supervision. The resulting debris is removed through an aspirator coupled with the electrode. The procedure lasts approximately 20 minutes. The patient may be discharged home a few hours later.

We also offer classic surgical treatment methods for spinal disorders:

Lumbar discectomy

  • Cervical discectomy and arthrodesis (stiff implant) or arthroplasty (mobile implant),
  • Discectomy with transpedicular stabilisation in the case of spondylolisthesis and lumbar spondylosis,
  • Vertebroplasty (injection of bone cement into a vertebra) in the case of osteoporotic fractures and angiomas of the vertebral bodies in the thoracic and lumbar segments of the spine. The procedure is conducted under X-ray supervision and requires only a small incision of the skin.

Arthroscopy
Engaging in sporting activities – particularly basketball, volleyball, soccer or skiing – can easily lead to an injury that may have serious consequences. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive and safe method for the diagnosis and treatment of joints. It involves inserting a thin metal tube with a microcamera and a light source into the joint. The surgeon views the inside of the joint on a monitor and, after conducting this thorough inspection, performs the procedure. This allows the surgeons to avoid wide opening of the operated joints, shortening the full recovery period.

Among the procedures conducted at our centre are:

  • Diagnostic knee arthroscopy
  • Arthroscopic meniscectomy
  • Arthroscopic reconstruction of the anterior/posterior cruciate ligament
  • Arthroscopic knee surgery in cases other than the ones mentioned above
  • Hip/tarsal/shoulder/elbow arthroscopy
  • Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.

Treatment cycle

Our patients are offered a full treatment cycle including the following stages:

  • Qualifying physician consultation
  • Arranging the date of the procedure
  • Preparing for the procedure
  • Conducting the procedure
  • Postoperative care. After the procedure, the patient is transferred to a recovery room, where they remain for between several hours and three days, depending on the type of procedure. Subsequently, the patient is discharged home or transferred to one of the five convalescence rooms in the Department of Rheumatic Orthopaedics and Spinal Surgery
  • Early postoperative rehabilitation. This is conducted by a qualified physiotherapist in accordance with the physician's instructions. Prior to discharge, each patient is instructed in the exercises they need to perform at home. Our centre offers continued rehabilitation in an outpatient or inpatient system
    Follow-up visit.

Full-body cryotherapy
Everyone is welcome to benefit from full-body cryotherapy at the Education and Rehabilitation Centre in Konstancin. This is an excellent adjunctive treatment method for locomotor diseases and a perfect form of biological renewal.

The procedure involves exposing the surface of the body to very low temperatures (below 110°C/-166°F) in a special cryochamber, where patients stay for one to three minutes. The procedure is painless and very well tolerated. It is followed by an intensive 30-minute kinesitherapy session under the guidance of a physiotherapist.

Short-term exposure to very low temperatures has anti-inflammatory, antiedematous and analgesic effects, causes muscle relaxation and increases muscle strength. This results in increased effectiveness of physical exercises conducted after the procedure. Cryotherapy increases immunity against infections and improves the bone mineralisation process. The procedure also improves the feeling of wellbeing through the release of endorphins and testosterone, which relieve fatigue as well as raise the patients’ spirits and… libido.

Recreation and biological renewal
The Education and Rehabilitation Centre has an attractive offer for those who would like to improve their fitness and appearance.

We invite you to take advantage of our:

Swimming pool
Do you have muscle and joint pain? Does your whole body feel stiff? Would you like to take better care of yourself and lose weight? Maybe you are stressed? Visit our swimming pool!

Our swimming pool measures 12 × 25 m (39.4 × 82 feet) and is 1.2 to 1.8 m (3.9 to 5.9 feet) deep. It is equipped with geysers, water whips and anticurrent system. The water is ozonated and its temperature is 29°C (84.2°F). Here, our guests can learn how to swim, as well as take part in group activities under the guidance of physiotherapists. A great choice of flotation devices, supervision from professional instructors and shallow water all contribute to the favourable conditions for people who cannot swim. The swimming pool pass price includes access to the steam bath, dry sauna and spa bath.

Swimming and massages in the water are indicated for people with locomotor disorders – they are an excellent adjunct to the rehabilitation process. Systematic use of the swimming pool takes the weight off the spine and peripheral joints, relieves muscle tension, activates the cardiopulmonary system, increases locomotor flexibility (muscles, ligaments and tendons), has an analgesic effect, conditions the body and helps to reduce weight.
