How to Choose a Cancer Treatment Center Abroad

Getting diagnosed with cancer would be a turning point in everyone’s lives. Its mortality rates are generally high and it lead people to desperate moves in order to find a cure. Since not all cancers are treatable, depending on the type and the progression of the disease, cancer patients would usually want to do anything they can to try and find a treatment.

When looking for a cancer treatment, you have two options:

-Find local cancer centers – Travelling with cancer is hard, especially if it has progressed to envelop multiple organs. So, looking for a cancer treatment locally is always the first choice, either through clinics which accept medical insurance, or private clinics. Depending on the country you live in, some treatments might be unavailable, though, or too expensive.

-Find cancer treatments abroad – Since cancer treatments vary from one country to another, it is quite possible that another country has a treatment that has higher success rates for your type of cancer. Also, since not all cancer treatments are free even in one’s own country, the cost for the treatment might be lower elsewhere, so it is worth a shot to try and look for a cancer treatment abroad.

However, whatever you choose, it is important to research well and to find as much information about treatment before choosing it. Cancer is a serious, life-threatening condition which does not leave much time to experiment. A treatment needs to be effective if it is going to save your life. This is why research is so important – it helps you make an informed decision about which treatment might actually work.

How to make an informed decision?

There are numerous treatments for different types of cancer. Aside from the already accepted treatments worldwide, like chemotherapy, there is a multitude of others who are in trial or are just not accepted as much, even though they are safe. This makes it hard for a desperate cancer sufferer to choose, as none can guarantee a 100% success rate. However, through thorough research, it is possible to find which treatments work the best. This is why it is important to make an informed decision, and not hasty one.

What to look for when researching medical centers?

  • Qualifications and experience – Cancer is a global topic, and one on which there are many symposia, conferences and gatherings. Look for a doctor who frequents these gatherings, as it means they are up to date with the latest innovations in cancer treatment. Also, check for the credentials of the doctors at the clinic that you are looking at and see for how long they have been treating cancer. Most importantly, check whether the doctor that will be treating you is specialized in that particular kind of cancer, as cancer treatments differ with the affected area.
  • Pricing and inclusions – For someone diagnosed with cancer, money is usually an unimportant thing, as the only thing that matters is their salvation, but it is very important to pay attention to how much you will pay. Some clinics offer ultra expensive packages for ordinary cancer treatments, selling it as new and revolutionary. On the other hand, those that don’t offer clear and understandable packages for reasonable amounts of money. You should always check what is included in the treatment package, so that you can plan the money and not be left without anything in a foreign country (if you decide to travel).
  • Check the facilities – The third thing that you need to look for is the state of the facilities where the treatment is administered. If they are unkempt or don’t have the latest tools for fighting cancer, then you should probably look elsewhere. You can do this by finding pictures of the clinic online or looking at a video which presents the facilities. Just make sure that those pictures and videos are real, which is why you need to look for multiple sources.

Questions to ask before booking

Is the clinic certified by relevant authorities to provide cancer treatments? – Cancer treatments are among the heaviest regulated treatments in most countries. While this might leave some treatments unavailable, you can be sure that if the clinic is certified than it probably provides quality care. Stay away from clinics that do not have the required certification, no matter what they promise.

How much will the treatment package cost me? – The cost of the package will depend on many things, notably on travel costs, the type of procedure, how large the clinic is, etc. Don’t always go for the cheapest, as, in some cases, this can mean that something is omitted from the package.

Does the country legally allow the treatment that you want? – Some cancer treatments are considered illegal in some countries, so it is wise to learn which treatments are allowed where you are going. If a treatment is illegal in one country, it is possible that it is legal in another. Whatever you do, don’t choose illegal treatments, as they are usually done without the knowledge of the regulatory bodies, meaning that something is not right there.

How damaging is the treatment to my overall health? – Some treatments, like chemotherapy, cure cancer, but at the cost of overall health. There are other similar treatments, while there are also newer ones, like immunotherapy, which target cancer cells specifically and leave the rest of the system intact. It is always better to choose a treatment which will not lead you through excruciating agony, even though it might save you.

Cancer is the most difficult of diagnoses to receive. In most cases it leaves people without hope that they can do anything to recuperate. However, it does not have to be like it. There are numerous treatments all across the globe, and there are high chances (depending on the stage of your cancer) that one or two of them would work. This is why it is important to thoroughly research all the options available. We are always here to help you find what you are looking for.
