Is the gastric balloon procedure safe?

Is the procedure painful?

The insertion itself is not painful. For endoscopic balloons, you are sedated. For swallowable balloons, it feels like swallowing a large vitamin pill. However, most patients experience stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting for 1 to 3 days after insertion as the stomach tries to digest the foreign object. Your doctor will prescribe strong medication to manage these symptoms.

What is the diet like after the procedure?

You will follow a strict transition diet. Days 1-3 are usually clear liquids (water, broth). Days 4-7 move to soft foods (yogurt, soup). By the second week, you can slowly return to solids. What happens if the balloon ruptures?
