How to find a dentist abroad?

Choosing your dentist in foreign destination can be taxing and worrisome. You need to do a lot of sleuthing to make sure you meet safety, quality and budgetary expectations. With thousands of dentists practicing all over the world, how do you narrow down your research to find the dentist right for you? With that in mind, here is a simple list on how to find a dentist in a dental destination.

1. Know what kind of dentist you need.

Dentists have different specializations just as doctors. Knowing their specializations can help in narrowing our search. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), here is a list of dental specialists recognized by them.

  • Endodontist (Root Canal Specialist)
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (specializes in Tooth Extraction and Oral Surgery)
  • Orthodontist&Dentofacial Dentist (Bite and Dental Braces Specialist)
  • Pedodontist (Dentist for children)
  • Periodontist (Gum Disease Specialists)
  • Prosthodontist (Restorative Dentistry Specialist)

2. Research in medical tourism sites, dental forums and sites of dental clinics.

Spend time to research on these sites. There are details you need to take note of particularly on the credentials and experience of your dentist:

  • What is your dentist’s specialty training?

If his specialization is on Prosthodontics, then most probably he/she can perform dental implants, crowns and dental fillings with ease and fewer complications.

  • Is your dentistboard certified or licensed to practice? This is very important to note of especially if you are seeking treatment in another foreign destination. Your dentist should be able to practice dentistry legally.
  • How long has your dentist beenin the dentistry business? 5 years or longer preferably.
  • What does his patients and peers say about your dentist? Does your dentist have a bad or good reputation?
  • What does the testimonials or forums say about his/her practice?
  • What was their personal experience on the care they received?
  • Is your dentist a member of dental associations? (E.g. Mexican Dental Association; American Implant Association).
  • Does your dentist have Certifications on Continuing Professional Education? If your dentist has current certifications, this means he/sheis updated on the latest diseases, trends, and procedures in a specialization or in dentistry in general.

3. Ask your family, close friends and peers for dentists (abroad) they can recommend.

More often than not, you end up with the dentist they’ll recommend because you trust their judgment. But, it’s also important to choose the care based on what you think is important. For example, it’s a must for you to have care that is affordable, at the same time safe and high quality.

4. You can always ask your family doctor for a referral of a dentist he/she personally knows.

Dentists and doctors and dentists value referrals from their peers. More often, they give extra care to their referred clients/patients.

5. It helps if you give your (probable) dentist a call or pay him a visit.

This helps you properly assess your dentist more. This will validate the information you gathered from the internet, from dental forums and from recommendations made by your family and friends. This also helps in assessing the professional capability of his staff.

6. Choose a dentist you are comfortable with.

If he/she is obliging especially when you have questions or if he is professionally therapeutic in his care, then he is a good candidate.

7. Choose your dentist according to the criteria set above and other details you consider important.

Choose your dentist according to the criteria above along with other salient details such as:

  • Insurance/payment plans of your dentist;
  • Travel, accommodation and treatment packages he/she offers;
  • Your overall budget;
  • And of course!Safety and Standards of Practice.
