The nasal septum is the thin wall inside the nose that separates the two nasal cavities. Ideally, the nasal septum is located centrally and the two cavities are perfectly equal. However, in 80% of the cases, the patient’s septum is shifted to one side, resulting in a nasal passage that is smaller than the other. This anatomic situation, in which the nasal septum is significantly shifted to one side or another, is called deviated septum.

Deviated Septum causes:

In some of the cases, the deviated septum forms since fetal development and symptoms appear since childhood. But in most cases, the deviated septum is the result of a trauma to the nose septum that deploys from its central position.

Severe symptoms such as significant reduction in airflow, chronic sinusitis and frequent bleeding will require deviated septum surgery for correcting the deviated septum.

The surgery called septoplasty and it’s the only way to repair the deviated septum. During this procedure the nasal septum is placed in its anatomic position, thereby releasing the blocked nasal cavity.

Septoplasty is performed through the nostrils and therefore doesn’t require any incision or facial swelling, and postoperative hematomas are minimal. The surgery can be performed under local or general anaesthesia.
